Eastern Catholic and Orthodox alike have this unique devotion to the Prophet Elias by dedicating churches to him. I know that the prophets are regarded as Saints, they have feasts and troparions, and icons of them are usually in churches. But I do not know of any Eastern churches named after other prophets.

So my question is why is the unique honor given to this prophet and not others?

Which other OT prophets would you like to name your church after, and why?

Because he is Great Prophet, and He is Alive, in the middle East we still say Mar Elias el-hay which it means Saint Elias alive, IOW he did not die, another reason, that he is always making Miracles and appearing, HE protected me many times and many of my freinds during the war in Lebanon we have not only Churches dedicated to him (peace be upon his name) but a whole streets and areas named after him:

Spraznika!
off topic-- Did you get your cars, bicycles, skate boards etc. blessed? I actually washed my quite dirty car in anticipation of the blessing. 👍

The Ancient Order of Our Lady of Mt Carmel honors the Prophet St Elias as the founder of their contemplative order, which is also known informally as “the order of prophets.” Historically, disillusioned crusaders from the west saw that due to sin and discord amongst the crusading armies that the Holy Land would not be wrested from Muslim control; some of these became hermits by the spring of St Elias on the slopes of Mount Carmel. They took him as their inspiration, spending their days in solitary prayer for the modern people of Israel, the Church. They asked the Bishop of Jerusalem for, and got from him a rule codifying their simple lifestyle. When Muslims eventually pushed out the last of the Crusaders, most of the hermits of Mt Carmel were reluctantly evacuated to Sicily, France, and England, (the remaining ones were martyred) after which they were ordered by the Pope to become a mendicant order–but to this day, each good Carmelite is at heart a hermit.

It is said among some cloistered Carmelite monasteries that as the monks or nuns walk up in single file to receive Holy Communion, —that sometimes, they suddenly see at the end of the queue a barefoot, shaggy old man clad in animal skins who also receives Holy communion; and then suddenly he isn’t there;—St Elias visiting, and in communion with, the modern members of the Order of prophets!

The Carmelite definition of a prophet is not so much “one who foretells the future” --as one who announces the coming of the Kingdom of God, (like St John the Baptist) which everyone is glad to hear; AND who denounces everything which interferes with the coming of the Kingdom of God (like Elias denouncing the wickedness of King Achab; and St John Baptist denouncing King Herod’s taking his brother’s wife) which often gets the prophet’s head chopped off. (Like St John the Baptist. St Elias had a price put on his head by evil Queen Jesebel, and fled for his life.)
As Our Lord said, A prophet is not appreciated in his native land or by his own people. . .:sad_yes:

Wow! How fascinating! I never heard stories of St. Elijah’s activities in the world today! Where can I find out about other such incidents? (preferrably on the internet.)

(I have been serving Mass once a week and on special occassions for the local Carmelite nuns, which I began four years ago - “coincidentally” on the Feast of St. Elijah - hence my love of this saint!)

God bless!

John

I think the at the Jewish Passover meal an extra place is set at the table for the Prophet Elias, and at some point the father or presider at the Pasch orders that the front door be opened ( at least a bit) so that Elias can enter if he is passing by. . .

I did get my car blessed for this feast a second time, as a visitor on Sunday at St George Melkite in Sacramento. 👍 They apparently do the blessing the Sunday after the Feast day, we do it the Sunday preceding the feast. Didn’t any of the other parishes here bless cars, bikes, skateboards…?

St. Elias -Elijah - is very strong in the Holy Land.

Elijah was one of the important Biblical prophets, who lived in the 9th C BC during the times of King Ahab and his wicked queen Jezebel. Elijah is regarded by all faiths (Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze) as a healer, a miracle maker, and a great hero who stood against the might of Kings and false prophets. He is incorporated in many of the religious accounts (such as the transfiguration of Jesus) and traditions.

Elijah operated in the area of the Carmel and the northern parts of Israel, and left his name and memory of events in many Biblical and ancient places.

:thumbsup:Check our summary page on Elijah the prophet. This page summarizes the sites where Elijah operated, and are featured in BibleWalks.com.

I’ve personally always considered him as perhaps the greatest of the prophets, and representative of the prophets as a whole. He was also blessed with having been taken directly to heaven without dying, something that very few people have been priviledged with (Enoch, Elijah, Mary(?)).

Divine Liturgy, July 20, The Holy And Glorious Prophet Elijah

Toparion Tone 4:
An angel in the flesh, the foundation of the prophets, and the second forerunner of Christ, the glorious Elijah from on high sent grace to Elisha to cure sicknesses and cleanse lepers. He likewise overflows with healing for those who honor him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

Kontakion Tone 2:
Prophet and seer of the mighty deeds of our God, renowned Elijah, you stopped the rain clouds by a word. Intercede for us with the only one who loves us all.
