His spiritual greatness in particular is shown by this inimitable account of Saint John the Apostle written by a member of the Orthodox Church.

A Painting: "St. John on Patmos," can be seen at [abcgallery.com/P/patinir/bles1.html](http://www.abcgallery.com/P/patinir/bles1.html)
In his old age, Saint John the Apostle was exiled to the Greek island of Patmos. There he had astonishing visions which are the basis of the New Testaments's Book of Revelation. In this painting he is shown having the vision recorded in Revelation 12, when he saw a portent heaven of the dragon, Satan, coming threateningly before a woman, the mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, who has also been seen as representing the Church.
