Saint Mark - Stagger in Heart

Saint Mark reports to us that it has been said

• that anything you ask will be granted if you do not stagger in your heart…

They might be referring to Mark 11:23. That’s the closest I could find. In the NAB, it says:

“Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him.”

All of the translations I have (NAB, NJB, RSV) refer to it as ‘doubt’ in the heart - a lack of faith.

Actually I only have ever used the Douay-Rheims version
if it was good enough for Saint Jerome, its good enough for me.
Mark 11:23 I know what it is saying, I was asking how people have accomplished this…

That was pretty good! It’s like KJV advocates saying “if it was good enough for Saint Paul…”

Saint Jerome did translate the Bible.

Not into English though, the English language did not exist at the time old Jerome was at work, and the proto-German language that English derives from was so different that you, I and modern Germans would not comprehend it. Languages aren’t invented (except for Esperanto), they evolve in the way people use them. The Douai Bible has been revised several times! I think it would be nice to have a look at an original Douai edition.

Some Protestants think the Bible fell out of the sky complete as the King James Authorized version. Of course we know better, it was the Douai-Rheims!

No offence taken!! You are correct Saint Jerome naturally did not translate to english - However I have done a fair amount of research and the engilsh translation we have - Douay-Rheims - is considered to be accurate to Saint Jeromes work

I’d just chime in to say that Esperanto was both invented and has evolved. Vatican Radio broadcasts in the language 3 times a week and the liturgy and bible have been translated into the international language.

In Esperanto the passage in question is
Vere mi diras al vi: Se iu diros al ĉi tiu monto: Estu formovita kaj ĵetita en la maron, kaj ne dubos en sia koro, sed kredos, ke okazos tio, kion li diras, tiu ĝin havos.

Truly I say to you: If anyone will say to this mountain, be moved away and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that that will occur, what he says, that person will have it.

These translators (translating from the original) saw it as doubt. ‘Stagger’ may be archaic usage, although this is locked into the language as “the price of gas in this country is staggering” this does not mean walking in a zigzag path.

Thanks - not really asking about the translation or the word itself…
but how does one develop tha ability to “ask” without stagger or doubt…that is indeed the real question…perhaps this is not the correct forum
