Australia was thrilled yesterday (17-October-2010) when Blessed Mary Makillop was canonised as “Saint Mary of the Cross Makillop”. A particularly happy occasion, as this is the FIRST SAINT that our country has produced.

However, today (18-October-2010), the Monday morning afterwards, many were shocked and dismayed to hear that Zoo magazine (a men’s magazine that no good Christian man should ever lay hands or eyes upon) had published a pornographic section profaning our new saint, as well as mocking the Holy Father Benedict XVI, and making a blasphemous reference to the blessed sacrament.

Words cannot describe the mixture of anger and sadness that are within me over this matter.

Is nothing sacred in the world today?

I’m sure those magazines just do that to get attention. Just ignore it.
And anyone who reads those magazines needs help anyway. I’ll just pray for them.

Hi hartleymartin,
May I offer my congratulations on the occasion of Mary MacKillop’s Sainthood!
As an avid Australiophile I am overjoyed.
May I also echo my friend JRPO’s post: ignore the idle minds. I, too, will pray for them.
God Bless,
Colmcille.

I’m afraid that for some people in this world, nothing, indeed, is sacred. Their lives are diminished by their inability to recognize sanctity and they are in need of our prayers. On a brighter note, the entire Church joins with the Australian Church in celebrating the life and holiness of St. Mary Makillop. She is our answer to those who do not recognize holiness. May God continue to bless the Church in your land.

As an American, I share in your joy over your first Saint, Mary of the Cross MacKillop!

I also share your anger over the trashy ‘men’s magazine’ that mocked her, our Holy Father, and the Blessed Sacrament.

My ex-housemates boyfriend brought this magazine, it is nothing but pictures of women who have to dignity and filled with stupidity. I just saw a article on news.com (the perthnow section) that claims the cancers where “cured” by biology and not God and Mary. Absolute stupidity and a lack of respect people have these days who have no understanding…

It is St. Mary who has told me that I should be a Catholic and the Father at my University is helping go through my journey, I was baptized as a baby an Anglican. Mary is now my patron Saint

Yet another example of the anti-theist, degenerate culture of relativism and self-destruction that permeates the west and most particularly Australia. As im sure my fellow australian catholics can agree, we truly live in a society that has made itself an enemy of God.

Thankfully it is obvious that it is self destructive and will inevitably destroy itself either by demographic decline via the selfish attitude towards sexual relations, or simply through people realising the emptiness of atheism and returning to the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, The ONE true faith.

Sancta Maria Crucis:

Ora pro nobis

Omnium sanctorum

Ora pro nobis

Amen

OH~ I heard she was going to get nominated but didn’t realise she was a Sister of St. Joseph

Saint Mary of the Cross Makillop - Saint (verified by miracles)

Sister Irene McCormack - The process is being urged to start with her, but as she would be a martyr, miracles won’t be necessary for her case.

Isn’t it funny… Australia has one Saint, and might have another… both from the same religious order.

Hartleymartin, I too have been saddened, to some she is not such a great Australian simply because she was a catholic.
Believe it or not I actually feel so sorry for these people and pray for their souls.
May our beloved Mary of the cross intercede for us. We are very fortunate.

What gets me is that in an “enlightened” and “culturally aware” age, it is somehow acceptable to mock a large religious group.

A few lessons in history should give people a new respect for Christianity. Mother Mary Makillop’s and Father John Tenison-Woods’ work with education for the poor was ahead of any government initiative by at least 20 years, and in reality the government’s work was only a response to the growing number of Catholic Schools.

In 1880, legislation was passed to make primary education compulsory and cut-off all funding to religious schools. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that religious schools were able to get funding in the form of grants for all school (public, catholic and independent) to build libraries and science laboratories.

It is also a well-known fact that in modern-day Australia, Catholic Schools provide a better overall education that public schools - this is reflected in the average and median scores attained at the Higher School Certificate or Year 12 level.

Not exactly true, I have friends who attended both private and public school’s…they found public schools to be better - but then again I am not 100%I IF they where Catholic or not. Also I can take side for public schools, I did all of my schooling in public schools - cos my family are not rich, and public schools are cheaper. Yet I still passed Year 12 SACE, and after 5 years of working and deciding what to do, I have made it at University 🙂

I’m speaking of broad terms if you make a comparison of HSC marks year-by-year and school-by-school.

I was speaking with a member of my youth group this afternoon and someone told her that 70% of university graduates did not enter university straight from high-school. Sounds like both you and I are of that ilk, as I am in my current degree after several years of tafe, work and general soul-searching.

(Which included a stint as the cleaner of St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney)

Yeah I did try studying at UNISA via correspondence for the year after I finished high school (I lived in a country town)…it turned out almost impossible for uni, without the support - work was the worst. Then I got too comfortable working, then applied for Uni when I moved interstate - and got in 🙂
