see “No one has greater love than this…” – St. Maximilian Kolbe - Vatican News
When Father Kolbe heard a fellow prisoner in Auschwitz concentration camp plead he had a family, Father Kolbe asked to be executed in his place. Father Kolbe, a Polish priest, prominent for his work in promoting the faith, had set up a dynamic and the largest Franciscan community in the world before the war. After the Nazis occupied Poland this community sheltered Jews, but then the Nazis destroyed everything. Sent to Auschwitz concentration camp, he made his great act of love and faith in the midst of all the horror and asked to take the place of another man, sentenced to starve to death.
