Does your parish recite the St Michael prayer regularly after Mass? Why? I don’t get it. Do you feel the Mass itself was not a sufficient prayer?

Peace!!!

It’s a part of the Leonine prayers that were prayed after Mass for almost a century.

Why should we stop praying after Mass?
Not saying we should.

Peace!!!

I’ve been a member at a parish that did this and several that did not. I love it. I personally do it after Mass. Your question seems a little combative. Can you expand on why you don’t get it or think it is a good idea?

Last year, in the Philadelphia archdiocese, Archbishop Chaput made a special request that all parishes pray the St. Michael prayer together for the intention of helping the Church through the turmoil caused by the sex abuse scandal. Many churches have been praying it after Sunday Mass, which is the traditional time when it was prayed as part of the Leonine Prayers prior to Vatican II. Some churches pray it before Sunday Mass. I am also aware of other churches that have been praying the Prayer to St. Michael and the Hail Holy Queen (both of which were Leonine Prayers) either after Masses or during the “announcement time” for a long time, way before the Archbishop made his request.

There were a number of other dioceses last year where the bishop or archbishop asked all the parishes to say the St. Michael Prayer for the same reason.

This has nothing to do with the Mass not being a “sufficient prayer”. We are supposed to “pray always”. We don’t stop praying just because we had a Mass which conveyed immeasurable benefits.

The Mass is the perfect payer with intercessions and immediately following this perfect prayer we pray to Saint Michael to defend us in battle as though the Mass was somewhat insufficient. This is why i don’t get it. If the Mass is the perfect prayer why ask St Michael for further help? I certainly dont have a problem with praying to Saint Michael, but right after the most perfect prayer to God? :man_shrugging:t3:

Peace!!!

Time is irrelevant to God. It matters not to him whether you pray the prayer before the Mass, after the Mass, or in the announcement time portion of the Mass.

Like I said, we do not pray a perfect prayer and then stop praying. We keep on praying when Mass ends. Jesus said, “Pray always”. He didn’t say, “Pray always, except right after Mass because that’s a perfect prayer so you can just quit praying for a while after it’s done.”

I certainly dont have a problem with praying to Saint Michael, but right after the most perfect prayer to God? :man_shrugging:t3:
This makes no sense. God is timeless. All reverent prayer is good. It doesn’t matter if before or after. If anything, rushing out of mass as soon as it’s over would be more insulting than waiting and saying another prayer or two.

Yep, we pray the St Michael prayer and Hail Holy Queen after Mass.

Now im wondering if leaving after the Saint Michael prayer is sufficient or insulting.

Peace!!!

Well, Pope Leo XIII didn’t think it was sufficient if it was a Low Mass.

😉

We do pray this after every mass. Old parish used to do this at the end of the rosary before Sat vigil. Seems very appropriate for the times.

Seriously?
It was part of the Leonine Prayers, aka as prayers after mass or prayers ordered by the pope after low mass from 1884 until Inter Oecumenici suppressed them in 1965.
They were ordered to be said after low mass by Pope Leo Xlll for a resolution to the papal state question, then after that was resolved with the Lateran Treaty in 1929 it was for the consecration of Russia until they were suppressed. However most EF low masses still do them.
The Leonine Prayers text is this.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

(Said 3 times)

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee to we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mouring and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.(the priest alone)
O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with mercy upon the people who cry to Thee; and by the intercession of the glorious and immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Saint Joseph her spouse, of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the saints, in Thy mercy and goodness hear our prayers for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty and exaltation of the Holy Mother the Church. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us.

(Added by Pope Saint Pius X in 1904)

Not only were those stripped with Inter Oecumenici but so were the Judica Me Psalm 42, and the last gospel.

How sad it is. The bride of Christ hasn’t been the same for a half a century now.

Yep. My bishop asked all the parishes in the diocese to pray the St Michael Prayer after every Mass. He has also been talking more in homilies about the reality of Satan and not being fooled by him just being a vague notion.

From what he has said he is very concerned that people seem to have lost the sense that evil is real. This prayer really bring it to the forefront with the final line about “Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls”.

You are not forced to join in. If you don’t want to join us in this prayer then don’t.

You kind of do if the bishop prescribes it.
Saying the Leonine Prayers isn’t really an option when the priest begins saying them at Latin Mass. You get back on your knees and say them and then he processes out after.
Talk about rude. Whoever is claiming the Saint Micheal prayer is unnecessary is totally missing the point. After the ite misse est we are meant to go out and proclaim the Gospel. I know it is kind of confusing when priests use these new options for the dismissal but really it should be go forth. Saying a prayer to the leader of the angels to stay on the right path is the most perfect way to go forth to begin with as we leave the church. Yes Mass is the perfect prayer. But I feel like what you are implying is that I shouldn’t do any private prayer since I already recited lauds, the office, or vespers alone.
