My first name is Ellen, I believe there is not a St. Ellen, so I will claim St. Helen. St. Helen, pray for us.

Mother Mary, pray for us!

St. Elizabeth pray for us!

St. Patrick, pray for us!

St. Paul, pray for us!

(Also, since my parents chose “Paul” as my middle name not because of Saint Paul, but because of John Paul II): John Paul II, pray for us!

Not being Catholic I don’t understand this. Could someone explain? Is every Catholic given a saint that prays for them? If you are to become a Catholic do you pick one or is one given to you?
Thank you for answering me,

Strictly speaking, not all of us are named after saints. My father has a first name and a middle name, neither of which are saints’ names.

However, it is fairly widespread practice that a person will either be named by their parents (at birth and baptism) after one or more saints, and/or choose a patron saint for themselves when they are confirmed. Which is what I did.

If you become Catholic, assuming you aren’t an infant, you can choose one or more saints to be your patrons for baptism and/or confirmation, depending on which sacraments you receive. It isn’t compulsory though.

By the way, if your name is that of a saint, even as a non-Catholic they are already praying for you … they don’t discriminate in their prayers 😃
