Saint names for confirmation

I have recently enjoyed researching the man by the name of Father Emil Kapaun. If you have not heard of him I would highly look into this man’s life. I was curious that since Kapaun could possibly become a saint and is in the process of research in Rome but it not yet, he is considered a servant of God by the Church. I was wondering if Emil could be used as a saint name during confirmation.

I am not in to RCIA anymore I joined last fall but had to drop because of a job ( I am student). I am planning on rejoining this next fall when I move to a university and was wondering if I could use Emil Kapaun as a name. As a Kansan he is quite inspirational. Thank you!

I would double check with a priest, but I’m pretty sure that they have to be saints. Maybe you can find out the saints he had a special devotion to, and go with one of those.

A confirmation name is purely a matter of private devotion. It is not registered anywhere on the parish records and there is no requirement that you choose one at all. So as long as the name is suitable for baptism (i.e. “not foreign to Christian sentiment”) then I can’t see how anyone could say it’s unsuitable for confirmation.

I am the DRE at our parish. While to my knowledge there is no absolute answer for your questions we have set guidelines/requirements in our parish. Mostly because of the reason for choosing a saint for Confirmation anyway.
We will only allow a student in our classes (I am not involved in our RCIA, only RE) to choose one either fully canonized or in the process. Such as Blessed Pope John Paul II. While we can not fully call him a saint just yet, he is in the process officially…therefore it is a fair assumption he is in heaven! We would allow Confirmandi in our parish to choose him. My daughter will be confirmed next year and she has already chosen Bl. Jose Sanchez del Rio after seeing the movie For Greater Glory. And that is permitted.
The best answer ever though is to ask YOUR priest! I’m sure he knows but if by chance he doesn’t, I bet he’ll find out.
