Saint Paul said “desire to prophecy.”

Desire spiritual gifts.

What do you think of this directive or this suggestion?
And have you been able to do this?
Demonstrate spiritual gifts?
 
The spiritual gifts I most seek are gentleness, humility, and firm trust in God.
 
Prophecy is the most misunderstood of the charisms. It is only occasionally about the future. Mainly, it is the encouragement of others via positive words and actions, spiritual support and other means intended for the edification - the building up - of the Church.
 
@po18guy touched on it and is absolutely on point with his assessment and commentary. Let me piggyback on his post:

@dann I just prophesied to you. Prophecy, authentic prophecy, is proclaiming the Words of God. Occasionally these words are predictions of things to come, but that is not an essential element of prophecy.

Prophechy in modern Western thought has become too entwined with predictions of the future, to the point where people now routinely confuse prophecy with divination.

Saying “repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand” or “God is Love” are both every bit as Prophetic as saying “the Lord will come with myriads of angels” and “the man of sin will be revealed at the end”.

Every Christian is anointed as a King, a Priest, and a Prophet when they are baptized. Every Christian, whether knowingly or unknowingly, acts in the office of Prophet whenever they proclaim the Gospel in a Catholic and orthodox manner. Every time a Catholic uses Scripture to teach someone he is prophesying. Every time a Christian corrects someone and exhorts authentic Christian doctrine they are, in a way, prophesying. At every Mass when the Gospel is proclaimed and the Priest teaches on it in accordance with orthodox Catholic teaching, he is prophesying to the congregation.

In the OT during the time of Elijah, the schools of Prophets didn’t run around doing nothing but making predictions about the future - that’s mere divination. They went around exhorting the people and proclaiming the Words of God. They taught the Scriptures and helped Israel conform itself to the Scriptures.

I’d say a good amount of what goes on in this forum is prophetic. Go to just about any thread and chances are you can find instances of people prophesying.

CCC 64
“Through the prophets, God forms his people in the hope of salvation, in the expectation of a new and everlasting Covenant intended for all, to be written on their hearts.22 The prophets proclaim a radical redemption of the People of God, purification from all their infidelities, a salvation which will include all the nations.23 Above all, the poor and humble of the Lord will bear this hope. Such holy women as Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Miriam, Deborah, Hannah, Judith and Esther kept alive the hope of Israel’s salvation. The purest figure among them is Mary.”

CCC 201

Through the prophets, God calls Israel and all nations to turn to him, the one and only God: “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other… . To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. ‘Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength.’”

CCC 785
“The holy People of God shares also in Christ’s prophetic office,” above all in the supernatural sense of faith that belongs to the whole People, lay and clergy, when it "unfailingly adheres to this faith . . . once for all delivered to the saints,“210 and when it deepens its understanding and becomes Christ’s witness in the midst of this world.”

CCC 871
“The Christian faithful are those who, inasmuch as they have been incorporated in Christ through Baptism, have been constituted as the people of God; for this reason, since they have become sharers in Christ’s priestly, prophetic, and royal office in their own manner, they are called to exercise the mission which God has entrusted to the Church to fulfill in the world, in accord with the condition proper to each one.”

CCC 873
“But the laity are made to share in the priestly, prophetical, and kingly office of Christ; they have therefore, in the Church and in the world, their own assignment in the mission of the whole People of God.”

But do you know of people who function as prophets .as what saint Paul teachers

Or as what is demonstrated at RHAMA bible school.with Kenneth Hagan. Or at ORU college .

or as john Paul Jackson. Taught and demonstrated in his " prophets and psychics

Myself.

“In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God”.

I just functioned as a Prophet and prophesied to you in accordance with my Prophetical Office bestowed on me at my baptism.

And I would argue that the “prophets” you spoke of are rather false prophets.

Some notable actual Prophets in the modern day are Dorothy Day, Pope John Paul II, and Padre Pio.

Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI are examples of modern day Prophets still alive on earth. Pope Francis is the Chief Prophet.

And he is a recognized prophet…with signs following.
Even novel hays. A prophetic voice…

And interesting . Mark Taylor the fire fighter prophet. .

And Benedick… Or pope Francis.
Not so much.
The nice thing about being educated catholic . is no one gets any smarter. So its more of a level playing field.
Go it mass. The real presence . confess your sins to a priest.

When he said desire to prophecy .

Or as in 1 cor. 14:25-26.
When you meet together bring a prophetic word. A tongue . a revelation. A hym.

So you and the group knows that God is in your midst.
