When he was ordained as a priest, he had a vision of the Sacred Heart of Jesus whose memory remained with him for all his days. He was born when Martin Luther appeared and during the epochal conflict which followed, by his writing and his teaching, he was in the forefront of work to defend Catholicism in Germany. And so he is remembered as the second apostle in Germany next to Saint Boniface.
