I want to pick Saint Sophia as my confirmation name, but I’m not finding a lot about her and what I do find is conflicting especially about how her daughters died. Does anyone know about her?

Hi Shawna,

All I really know is that she had three children, Faith, Hope and Charity. Her daughters were martyred for their faith, and Sophia died three days afterwards while praying by their graves. Her feast day is August 1.

Congrats on your confirmation!

We’ve got some info about her on our parish website at St Sophia UGCC. We commemorate her on Sept 17.

Sofia is also Greek for Wisdom, an attribute and gift of the Holy Spirit, so waht a great confirmation name.

Perhaps I am wrong, but isn’t Saint Sophia a metaphor for Holy Wisdom, as described in Proverbs 8 for example? That is, she is not exactly a real person, but Sophia is real in that she exists, and she is holy in that she leads Christians to Our Lord.

During the reign of the impious Roman Emperor Hadrian, a widow of Italian ancestry called Sophia, whose name means wisdom, lived in Rome.

The Saint Sophia who had martyred daughters that Shawna is asking about is the one I Thirst linked. You are correct that the word Sophia is also used this way, like in the context of Hagia Sophia, the church of Holy Wisdom.

There are icons of Holy Wisdom which use the context you reference. They depict Christ because Prov 8 was a foreshadowing of Christ.
