I read that St. Thomas was the only one to witness the Assumption of Mary.

Is this true? Does the Church teach this?

What is a good place that is trusted among the church to read about Thomas?

Hi Rodney, I don’t think the Church has a “position” on this. Here is a link to Augusta State University on the matter. :o

No, the church does not teach this. I am not sure where you heard this.

Saint Thomas Aquinas died in 1274, so I think we can rule this out…

On the cross, Jesus gave his mother into the care of John. John certainly knew what happened to Mary in the years after the Resurrection. The only “evidence” for Thomas witnessing the Assumption would either have to come directly from John, or from some other source whose veracity would have to be in question. Somewhat like the rest of the Gnostic gospels.

My two cents

There is a legend that Saint Thomas was not there when Mary left this life and was buried. Upon his return he went to her tomb and found it empty. While he was trying to figure this out Mary appeared to him, told him of her Assumption and gave him her sash as proof. This sash is preserved in some church a short distance north of Rome.

Regretfully, I have lost the travel book I found this in so cannot give you a source. However, I think some of the Eastern Church sites may have something on this if you try Google.

rotfl! 😃 That was my first reaction too!! 🙂 “Thomas” vs. “Saint Thomas”, I guess.
It took me a shocked minute to process the fact that “he couldn’t have meant that…” 😛 lol

I read something similar, but am more hazy on the details. Some visionary I think, French maybe, related a story that she saw Mary and the Apostles gathered together. Mary was dying? and she said to one of the other Apostles that St. Thomas always tried to do too much and had travelled so far on some mission that he could not return in time to see her before she died.
But maybe this is all too vague to be worth writing.
