Ive been trying really hard to find the right saint for me
and people keep saying “saints chose you”
what does that even mean?

please help me!

Once upon a time a friend of ours opened his front door and two cats walked in–sort of a, “Hi. We’re your cats”–and have been living with him ever since.

People develop a devotion and veneration for particular saints because there is something about these saints’ lives that speak to the hearts of certain people. Sort of a, “Hi! We’re your saints!”

Be patient.

Is that true? Really? I was wondering why my Saint (Anthony of Padua) loves me so much. For some reason, he has never failed me…I don’t know why he chose me, though.

Whether you know it or not, there’s a whole bunch of Saints who are your patrons already.
  1. The saint who shares your name (there probably is one, maybe more)
  2. The patron saint of your occupation
  3. The patron of your city/country
  4. The patron of any special “life conditions” i.e. maybe you are battling illness, or are going through a rough time, or anything else.
Try searching for saints that fit any of these categories. Read their biographies, try praying a few prayers associated with them. You might find a devotion that fits you very well.

Mine did choose me. When I converted and went through RCIA, I spent months reading about saints (since I didn’t know anything about any of them before). I had a few I found special devotion and connection to, and couldn’t decide.

Then I had a dream one night about St. Therese. She appeared just as her picture when she was a child. She was lost, and so was I, and we helped each other find the way home. 😃 The meaning of that dream couldn’t be any clearer–she was leading me home to the Church.

Then, after my confirmation, my DH’s aunt gave me a family heirloom rosary that had belonged to DH’s grandfather. It had a centerpiece of St. Therese, and it and the crucifix were surrounded by roses. She had no idea ahead of time that I had chosen Therese as my patron. So I even received my ‘rose’ from Therese!

for a starter you can click on the today’s saint link in my sig and start reading about various saints everyday. who knows, one may speak to you thru their biography.

**Sometimes, saints ‘find’ you rather than the other way around. I have found many saints who have influenced my life at certain stages.

For example, when I was a small child, devotion to Saint Joseph and the Blessed Virgin were very prominent in my life, particularly the latter which may have waned over the years but is still there.

When I was between the ages of 12 and 15 I was attracted to the life of Saint Dominic Savio. In high school and college it was Padre Pio. As a young adult my devotion was extended to St. Therese Liseux, the Little Flower. Now that I am much older, Saint Teresa d’Avila is prominent in my life.

By ‘prominent’ I mean that I actually feel that these particular saints have felt very close to me at various points in my life, and that they prayed for me to persevere within each passage. Of course, Christ has always been the center of my life. These saints in heaven, however, acted as ‘big brother’ ‘big sister’ to me in the way of understanding my faith and giving me personal direction - not by any sort of ‘intervention’ but by their example when they lived.

So, I would say, pray to Christ always, but also pray to His Mother. You’ll never know who will come knocking at your door. 😉 **
