Is it acceptable to pray to St. Uriel, given that he is not recognized by the Catholic Church as an archangel?
I’ve heard of Uriel too, the Angel from the East. But you’re right, he seems to be obscure. Does anyone else recognize him as an angel? Is it acceptable to pray to St. Uriel, given that he is not recognized by the Catholic Church as an archangel?
His is listed as an Archangel in Jewish tradition. He is mentioned in the non-canonical book Esdras IV. More specifically, he is the Angel of Death that was called down upon the Egyptians.I’ve heard of Uriel too, the Angel from the East. But you’re right, he seems to be obscure. Does anyone else recognize him as an angel?![]()
The Catholic Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel never mind an archangel. Is it acceptable to pray to St. Uriel, given that he is not recognized by the Catholic Church as an archangel?
My 1978 New American Bible lists Uriel as an archangel in the Catholic glossary in the back. The Catholic Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel never mind an archangel.
There are plenty of other saints you can pray too.
But Alfonsus says Eastern Catholics venerate Uriel. Does this not count? The Catholic Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel never mind an archangel.

The fact that Latin church doesn’t acknowledge him by name and has not approved a public cult does not preclude private veneration. Plenty of Catholics still fruitfully and licitly pray to St. Christopher. The Catholic Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel never mind an archangel.

Of course. The feast of St. Michael and all the angels is coming up this Saturday (November 8). Uriel is named in liturgical hymns on this day. In the Coptic church, he has his own feast day.But Alfonsus says Eastern Catholics venerate Uriel. Does this not count?
Then its wrong. The Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel or archangel. My 1978 New American Bible lists Uriel as an archangel in the Catholic glossary in the back.![]()
How can something that is in the Old Testament be apochryphal? Isn’t it one or the other? From Ask An Apologist:
QUOTE
If the being is in heaven, then it is a saint. However, the Catholic Church does not consider Uriel an angel, let alone a saint, because Uriel is only found in some Old Tesatament apochryphal writings.

I did not say that there was an article on Uriel. I said that he is listed as an angel. Actually, I believe that he is listed as an archangel, in the article on angels. I am not at home now, but I can look it up. How does a 1990 edition trump a 1978 edition? Isn’t the point that there have apparently been varying traditions in the Church? Then its wrong. The Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel or archangel.
My NAB edition is 1990 and the glossary has no reference to Uriel.
I would think the fact that Uriel is on the liturgical calendar would be considered a recognition. Then its wrong. The Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel or archangel.

Let me repeat this. The Catholic Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel/archangel.I would think the fact that Uriel is on the liturgical calendar would be considered a recognition.![]()
I’ve always been one to shy away from Uriel myself (and I still intend to), but I did a little bit more digging and found an interesting thread on this topic, and I think as long as u mean the Latin Church (which I’m assuming u are), then I think u are correct. However, in the context of what we’re talking about, it seems that if one says “the Church” or “the Catholic Church”, it encompasses the sui iuris Churches as well, in which case, it does appear to be true then that the Catholic Church does recognize Uriel since the Eastern Catholics do commemorate Uriel in their liturgy.Let me repeat this. The Catholic Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel/archangel.
Uriel is not on the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church.
Why would you pray to someone you don’t know for sure is a saint. The Church has a plethora of saints that can be prayed to without having to resort to someone who may or may not be a saint. All arguments aside about whether Uriel is a saint, angel, or archangel, It is my understanding that you can privately pray to whomever you please **whether they are a saint or not **so what is wrong with the OP praying to Uriel?
So is it your understanding that there is only one liturgical calendar in the Catholic Church?Let me repeat this. The Catholic Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel/archangel.
Uriel is not on the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church.
Of course! How else does person become a saint under the current process? In order to have a miracle attributed to his intercession, somebody had to pray to Pope John Paul II before his beatification. That’s the way the process works. We would have no new saints if we did things your way.Why would you pray to someone you don’t know for sure is a saint. The Church has a plethora of saints that can be prayed to without having to resort to someone who may or may not be a saint.
