This is, IMO, one impressive young dude. His English, which is a second language for him (he’s European) is perfect. And his logic, in discussions, is first rate. He is the sort that I would engage, in my specialty areas, but tend to defer to, outside them. And he’s around 15+ years younger than my daughter.

His abilities and performance, in general, impress me. And I would love to be able to reel off BALLAD OF THE WHITE HORSE, like I can Kipling poetry. Just one of those things I appreciate.

I didn’t know you were keen on Kipling GKC. My grandfather was a huge Kipling fan. He once wrote an article lamenting his decreased popularity after he went looking for an anthology of his poetry and couldn’t find one. I had won a song writing contest and he wanted to give it to me as a gift - I think I ended up with Robert Service instead.

I got Service, too. Your grandfather had good taste.

Kipling is a minor collecting area (which means I got no more than around 35-40 books on or by him; I got many, many such enthusiasms). The collected poetry is one of my favorites. My daughter and I, when she was young, used to recite alternate quatrains of “Gods of the Copybook Headings”.

And I wanted to have parts of “The Islanders” done up in calligraphy ("“No doubt but ye are the People - your throne is above the King’s”). He is my favorite fiction writer, overall.

Which, of course, tags me, literarily speaking.

I like a lot about him. Some few points, not so much. But nobody’s perfect. Not even my man Chesterton.

But alas you have resorted to betraying the Queen’s English with colloquialisms such as “dude” and as a result you will never be able to master such epic poetry! 😛

To bring in another book, I love the part in The English Patient where Amasy tells Kip that he is reading Kipling too fast - that he has to let the words come off his tongue at the speed of Kipling’s pen. I always think of that now when I read Kipling or a lot of literature from that period, and it is very effective.

I named my cat Kipling too.😛

By the way, it was nice seeing you tonight, Jim. The kids and I watched the special features for Star Wars Episode III and Lucas was showing the inner workings of ILM and the making of the film. Nice to see you!
