My stomach gets a little queezy when I read the stories of how people were tourchered. I like to hear about the saints but when reading my magnificat I get pretty sick to my stomach.

So I tend to skip the saints facts.

I feel like it is going to happen to me, or I am afraid that someone I know will end up like that.
Does anyone else have problems reading about the saints.
I do have a sesitive stomach and so I stay away from gory readings

I like to stay in reality but don’t want to be in a fantasy life either, how do I deal with this?

I was feeling guilty about not reading about the saints lives but maybe it would be nice it some mags would leave out some of the details, although I know that it may have been even worse than is printed.

Why does this bother you? The Martyrs should be venerated for their courage and faith; they died for Christ and his Church.

Instead of focusing on the gory details, try to focus on the fact that these individuals had such a strong faith in Christ. Pray that you may also develop a faith that is unshakable.

Remember that Christ was killed in the most horrific way possible; he was tortured, beaten, and nailed to a cross. He endured a slow and agonising death. Although this is gut wrenching, it is also the supreme act of love; it is the greatest thing that ever happened in the history of mankind.

The Martyrs died in a similar way; they died out of love for Christ. Always bear this in mind and I have a feeling that you wont feel nauseated in the future.

I do try to keep this in mind, and they are heros or heroines, but I would have been one of those that probably would have not been able to be before the cross.

God is allowing me to have my own crosses and nothing like the saints, I thought reading about how more serious a life they lived would make my own seem insignificant. Alas I read and am thinking what if I had to endure this, I would buckel.

Isn’t their a scriture about God making a way of escape, past our sins or our suffering?

Most people are not called to martyrdom. We should pray not to be put to the test.

Martydom is a test? I’m not sure if I know what that means?

OK. Here’s something that can easily happen these days:

You’re kidnapped by jihadists who abuse you physically and sexually and say it will stop only if you convert to Isalm, and otherwise they will kill you.

What would you do?

Don’t answer here to me. Take it to the Lord.

Now you see what “martyrdom as a test” means?

That was pretty definitive! You are saying I think that it would be a situation where you couldn’t talk your way out, no cellphone , and no gun or weapon available, someone or group right in my face and I have already suffered, (but/and) the people are giving me a choice? To live? after I have been so cruelly treated?
I guess I am following a bit and will pray on this and pray it never happens to this point.

I kind of thought martyrdom was a no choice thing but you guys have given me something to think about.

Of course martyrdom is usually a choice - the old Roman martyrs were usually given the option of saving their lives if they worshipped pagan idols.

And don’t focus on the feeling that you’d buckle in similar circumstances. It’s something you can’t possibly make predictions or guesses about apart from being in that same situation.

Simply pray to those very saints you read of that you may be courageous in the service of Christ as they were.
