everyone now in heaven is a saint, whether or not they are canonized, and whether or not they spent time in purgatory. Canonized means their name is on the list (canon means list) of saints who definitely are in heaven as attested by their martyrdom, or by life of outstanding, consistent virtue, as attested by miracles worked after death through their intercession (only after a long period of investigation called a “cause”). You don’t need to be canonized to be a saint, just get to heaven, with or without purgatory. they Church makes no definite statement about anyone being either in purgatory or in hell.
