Sharing this reflection from the Euchalette on today’s Scripture Readings, 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 13, 2015, p.1:

Today’s Scripture Readings:
new.usccb.org/bible/readings/091315.cfm

"THE CROSS, OUR SOURCE OF HOPE AND SALVATION"

"Today’s theme reminds us of the duty, which all of us have, to take up our cross and carry it in the footsteps of Christ. This is not something that we do with pleasure, for the cross always entails some degree of suffering and death. We instinctively choose life and tend to enjoy life. And yet, the cross looms large on the horizon of our earthly existence. It may be the cross of sickness, of natural defects, of failures, or of injustices inflicted on us. Or it may be the cross of living out the demands of our faith, as St. James reminds us in today’s Second Reading. Or it is the cross of bearing with one another’s shortcomings within our own family, in our place of work, in our communities . . . .

In this Eucharist let us ask for the grace to carry our cross with patience and in a spirit of faith, always remembering that the cross is the great bridge to heaven.

Today, let us also pray for our grandparents as we celebrate Grandparents’ Day."

The following is a beautiful meditation on THE VALUE OF SUFFERING by Dan Burke:

Collect (Opening Prayer):
“O God, who gave Saints Cornelius and Cyprian to your people
as diligent shepherds and valiant Martyrs,
grant that through their intercession

one God, for ever and ever.”

“With the help of St. Cyprian (190-258), Bishop of Carthage, Pope St. Cornelius (d.253) defended the faith and his own papal authority against heretics, some of whom lessened unduly the gravity of apostasy, others of whom denied that it could be forgiven. Their names are included in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I).” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

“St. Matthew was a publican, that is, a tax collector for Rome, a profession that was despised by the Jews. Our Lord called him to be an Apostle; his vocation reveals all professions, all work, and all other endeavors should be sanctified. According to tradition he preached the Gospel as far as Persia or Ethiopia. He is the author of the first Gospel, and his name appears in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I).” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

Today’s Scripture Readings:
new.usccb.org/bible/readings/092015.cfm

"LET THE FIRST BE THE SERVANT OF ALL"

"The aspiration to rise above others is deeply rooted in the heart of man. Its source is usually pride. On this 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are invited to overcome that pride with humble and generous service.

In the Gospel, Jesus challenges his disciples and us to be the servant of
all. That is the most practical and effective way to counteract the devastating consequences of ‘the passions that make war within our members.’ (Second Reading)

In this Eucharist, let us ask the Lord to grant us the grace to be able to serve with love and for love…"

September 23 - St. Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest (Memorial):

Collect (Opening Prayer):
Almighty ever-living God, who, by a singular grace,
gave the Priest Saint Pius a share in the Cross of your Son
and, by means of his ministry,
renewed the wonders of your mercy,
grant that through his intercession
we may be united constantly to the sufferings of Christ,
and so brought happily to the glory of the resurrection.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever."

Today’s Scripture Readings and reflection:
ymlp232.net/archive_gbmbuqgjgu.php

"St. Pius (1887-1968), affectionately known as Padre Pio, joined the Capuchin Friars and was later ordained a priest. For fifty years he lived at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotundo, where his miraculous abilities as spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor attracted the attention of the world. His humility and constant devotion to the Eucharist caused him to remark often, “I only want to be a friar who prays.” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

grant through his prayers that, denying ourselves,
we may hold fast to you with all our heart.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.”

“King St. Wenceslaus (907-929) ruled justly in difficult times. Known for his virtues and restraint, he was murdered by his brother for political and religious reasons.” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

September 28 - Saint Lorenzo Ruiz and Companions, Martyrs (Optional Memorial):

Collect (Opening Prayer):
“Grant us, we pray, Lord God,
the same perseverance shown by your Martyrs

September 29 - Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels (Feast):

Collect (Opening Prayer):
“O God, who dispose in marvelous order
ministries both angelic and human,
graciously grant
that our life on earth may be defended
by those who watch over us

one God, for ever and ever.”

Today’s Scripture Readings and Reflection:
ymlp232.net/archive_gbmbuqgjgu.php

"St. Michael (‘Who is like God?’) is the Archangel who fought Satan. He is the protector of all people and reminds the faithful of the real existence of the Devil and demonic activity. He is invoked for protection from the snares of the Devil.

St. Gabriel (‘Strength of God’) announced to St. Zechariah the birth of St. John the Baptist and to the Blessed Virgin Mary the birth of Christ. His greeting to Our Lady, 'Hail, full of grace,’ is one of the most familiar and frequent prayers of the Church.

St Raphael (‘Medicine of God’) is the Archangel who cared for Tobias on his journey. Every person on his or her pilgrimage through this life also has a guardian angel.

This feast is popularly called ‘Michaelmas’." (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

Today’s Scripture Readings and reflection:

“Born in Dalmatia, St. Jerome (342-420) studied in Rome. Living a monastic life, he traveled to Syria where he was ordained. Later, he returned to Rome as secretary of Pope Damasus, who commissioned him to revise the Latin texts of books of the Bible. After completing this task, he translated the entire Bible into Latin; his work, known as the Vulgate, was adopted by the Church as the official edition of Scripture.” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)
