April 09, 2016 - Saturday, 2nd Week of Easter:

Collect (Opening Prayer):
“Set aside, O Lord,
the bond of sentence written for us by the law of sin,
which in the Paschal Mystery you canceled
through the Resurrection of Christ your Son.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.”
or
“O God, who willed that through the paschal mysteries
the gates of mercy should stand open for your faithful,
look upon us and have mercy,
that as we follow, by your gift, the way you desire for us,
so may we never stray from the paths of life.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son…”

“St. Anselm (1033-1109) was born in Aosta, Italy, and died in England. He was in the Benedictine monastery of Le Bec in Normandy for about thirty years. In 1093 he was consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury and named Primate of England. In his defense of the Church he suffered much, including exile. He is called the Father of Scholastic Theology, and his doctrinal works are among the most noteworthy examples of theology and medieval mysticism.” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

April 23 - St. George, Martyr (Optional Memorial):

Collect (Opening Prayer):
“Extolling your might, O Lord,
we humbly implore you,
that, as Saint George imitated the Passion of the Lord,
so he may lend us ready help in our weakness.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.”

“Popular symbolism presents St. George (d.303) as a knight killing a dragon: the triumph of faith over the forces of evil. Born into an illustrious family in Cappadocia, at a young age he ministered during Emperor Diocletian’s reign. When the emperor promulgated an edict against Christians, St. George professed his faith publicly, for which he was martyred. He is the patron saint of England, Portugal, Germany, Aragon, Genoa, and Venice. His tomb is in Lod, near Tel Aviv, Israel.” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

April 23 - Saint Adalbert, Bishop and Martyr (Optional Memorial):

Collect (Opening Prayer):
“O God, who bestowed the crown of martyrdom
on the Bishop Saint Adalbert,
as he burned with zeal for souls,
grant, we pray, by his prayers,
that the obedience of the flock may never fail the shepherds,
nor the care of the shepherds be ever lacking to the flock.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.”

“St. Adalbert (956-997) was consecrated Bishop of Prague, whence he encouraged the evanlization of the Magyars. For having given sanctuary to a noblewoman convicted of adultery - and having excommunicated those involved in her being dragged from the church and murdered - he was exiled by the nobles of Prague. He preached the Gospel in Poland, Hungary, Russia, and Prussia, where he was martyred.” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

“Born in Germany, St. Fidelis (1577-1622) belonged to the Capuchin Order. He led a life of deep contemplation. As an evangelist and catechist, he was known as an advocate of the poor. Called the Apostle of Switzerland, he was martyred in that country.” (Daily Roman Missal, MTF.)

Sharing this reflection from the Euchalette, 04-24-2016, 5th Sunday of Easter, p. 4:

**A NEW WORLD BUILT ON LOVE **

"We Christians have something wonderful to look forward to: a totally “new world.” This will consist in a condition of perfect happiness, characterized by the absence of any form of suffering and by the deepest experience of God’s saving presence. (See today’s Second Reading, especially vv.3-4.)

Such a world, so different from the present one, will not be the product of man’s ingenuity, planning or efforts. By ourselves we are incapable of creating our own heaven. We are even unable to conceive it in our imagination, for we do not know what is really fulfilling for us.

The “new world” we eagerly await is the creation of God’s love for us. He alone knows what can make us really happy forever. He alone can make this plan a reality.

Yet, such a new world and new Jerusalem will not be simply a priceless gift distributed indiscriminately to all men, including those who persistently reject it. God treats us as adults. He respects our freedom and values our cooperation. He actually solicits it, gently and constantly. He wants us to be the ones who supply the labor, while He supplies the planning, the bricks, the mortar and the stones needed to build the “world” in which alone we will feel at home. In this way, the world without tears, death, mourning . . . will be not only a gift from God, but also the fruit of all the tears, pains, deaths . . . endured with love by us in this world."
(Pls read on for continuation of thought.)

**A NEW WORLD BUILT ON LOVE ** - continued:

"In practice, then, the “new world” will be the result of two loves: God’s love for us, and our love for Him and our neighbor. This is quite an uneven partnership, for there is no comparison between God’s role and ours. Yet, it is God Himself who has chosen us as His “partners.” Such has been His will and pleasure. It is His love which transforms our suffering and feeble efforts into the splendor of the “house of love” that we call “heaven.”

That final result will be like a splendid flower blossoming out of a dark, small, unattractive seed – the seed of our life on earth . . . The vital force that makes our poor efforts produce such a disproportioned result is our Christ-like love, the self-sacrificing love of God and neighbor which Jesus taught his disciples with his example, even more than with his words.

A love patterned after that of Jesus for his disciples is the only valid passport that will enable us to enter the “new Jerusalem,” our true home-land. Without a Christ-like love, we would feel total strangers and out of place in God’s Kingdom. With it, we shall feel perfectly at home, and enjoy the fruit of even the tiniest acts of brotherly love done in imitation of Jesus, “the Teacher of love.” (The Euchalette, April 24, 2016, 5th Sunday of Easter, p. 4.)
