Saints & Blesseds Who Were Handicapped or Disfigured

Please help me make a list of saints who were disfigured in some way or handicapped. I’d like to start by mentioning a saint I admire and wish to learn from:

Blessed Herman the Cripple (September 25)
-He wrote the Memorare, I believe.

Blessed Margaret Aiello (1200s?) was blind and suffered from scrofula.

Saint Bernadette of Lourdes was asthmatic from youth, and as an adult, developed bone cancer in her legs, from which she died in 1879.

Bl. Herman the Cripple is very inspiring, yes!

St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, as you can see in the paintings of him when he was older.

St. Bernadette had tuberculosis, and a tumor went to her knee. Her illnesses almost prevented her from religious life.

St. Peregrine had cancer in his arm, I believe, for years, but later was miraculously healed.

I was mistaken.

Blessed Herman is credited with the Salve Regina and Alma Redemptoris Mater.

Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa!!! I feel as if I keep saying her name to people enough, she will get her Sainthood. She was a Portuguese woman who jumped from a fourteen foot window to avoid being raped, and remained bed ridden the rest of her life. An extraordinarily selfless human being!!

St John Maria Vianney had mental disabilities. He had severe learning disabilities and he had a small level of intellectual impairment. That was the reason why it took him so many years to become a priest as he was unable to even learn the our father and that was the reason why the bishop sent him to Ars (a place without a church) because basically they thought he could not a priest due to him being mentally handicap. Despite all his disabilities and being rejected by the bishops for having mental disabilities he end up being the patron of all priests 🙂
 
By most accounts, Thomas Aquinas suffered from extreme obesity.

Truly heart-wrenching. I can’t remember he whole story but her parents were really callous about it.
 
Does St. Rose of Lima count? She tried to make herself unattractive by cutting off all of her hair and rubbing something irritating on her skin.
 
Kateri Tekawitha is one of our favorite saints. She has been influential in our family.
 
I hope this does not constitute a violation of the rule against resurrecting old threads (although this would be the appropriate weekend for that 😉 ), but I wanted to contribute St. Albert Chmielowski, aka “Brother Albert”, the founder of the Albertine order. Prior to his joining religious life, his leg had to be amputated as a result of injuries incurred in the 1863 uprising by Poles against the Russian czar.

St. Lidwine of Scheidam.

She was injured in an ice skating accident when she was thirteen, and never healed from it. She lived during the 1300’s. She was then afflicted with all different kinds of illnesses. She became blind, too. She is known as the patron saint of illnesses.
