We have a Father Polycarp here in our diocese. I think this would be a great name for a Pope.Pope Polycarp the First.
Most charismatic name ever.

Except at a diner.I can’t say I’ve ever met any every day Benedict’s however?
I know several Benedicts. It is a popular name in my Homeschooling Catholic circles.I can’t say I’ve ever met any every day Benedict’s however?
Is Ji Tianxiang a surname? That wouldn’t really make sense. If I wanted to take my papal name from this saint, I’d choose “Mark”.Why a European name?
How about Ji Tianxiang?
As in St Mark Ji Tianxiang,
That would be a eccumenical nightmare. The protestants (and perhaps even the Orthodox) would accuse the Pope of trying to be God.Will we ever have a Pope Jesus? A popular name amongst some hispanics…
Honestly, I think a lot will ride on what Prince Charles does when he become King of England (even though he’s not Catholic).I sometimes wonder if a man might take his own name when elected pope, e.g. could Thomas Jones become Pope Thomas. (No doubt everyone would call him Pope Tom?) Perhaps taking your own name might be considered pride.
Ancient tradition holds that St. Peter will return to guide the Church through the last days of the world. The “word on playground” that you have mentioned derived from the unapproved private revelation that names the last pope: “Petrus Romanus,” or Peter of Rome. When I was a school boy (many years ago), word on the playground was that the world will end on the election of Pope Peter II.
Why would they not already look to Queen Elizabeth, who kept her name?Dedios:

If Prince Charles keeps the name Charles (or if Prince William becomes King William), it will be an indication that the secular world is done with Regal names - which might inspire a future Pope to keep his given Christian name (assuming he has a Christian name).
So I’m sure future Popes will be looking closely at what then next two Kings of England do (even though they are not Catholic)
God Bless
The kings and queens of England have always kept their own names – usually their first name, less often their middle name. George VI, the father of the present queen, was baptized Albert Frederick Arthur George. I’m pretty sure that no king or queen of England has ever adopted a regnal name that was different from their baptismal names. If Prince Charles keeps the name Charles (or if Prince William becomes King William), it will be an indication that the secular world is done with Regal names - which might inspire a future Pope to keep his given Christian name (assuming he has a Christian name).
