Why we honor the saints (Nov 1) with a holly day of obligation and not the souls (Nov2) if those in purgatory are the ones than need us ?

Why do we need any days of obligation to prompt us to celebrate feasts, solemnities, or Sunday Mass ? Just do it!

All Saints is a joyful solemnity that celebrates the victory of the Church Triumphant and the glory of God Himself reflected in all the people who love Him. The sum is greater than its parts, and how great indeed all the saints combined with one voice. Throughout the year we commemorate other saints with varying degrees of festivity, and we venerate them because they are already in heaven.

By contrast, the Church Suffering, the holy souls in purgatory, still need our prayers as they are purified of the effects of sin. While these fine men and women are not yet in heaven and are not venerated as saints yet, we still have many incentives to pray for them. The whole month of November is dedicated to prayer for the dead. There are indulgences attached. Please note that these indulgences may only be applied to the souls in purgatory. Your parish or diocese may have special events. Check especially with local Catholic cemeteries, as they have chapels and special Masses. My own parish celebrates every year a “Mass of Remembrance” in which family members may bring a photo and name of a loved one to be remembered with a candle in a special procession.

Just because the Church has not given us a solemnity or an obligation on this day does not mean she cares not for the Church Suffering.

Normally, All souls is the beginning of a novena for the faithful departed. I think it is appropriate to have a Holy Day of obligation for all saints because it reminds us not only that sainthood is real and something to be aspired to by all.

What we should be doing is praying for the souls of the faithful departed every day.

Today is All Soul’s Day:
The commemoration of all the faithful departed is celebrated by the Church on 2 November, or, if this be a Sunday or a solemnity, on 3 November. The Office of the Dead must be recited by the clergy and all the Masses are to be of Requiem, except one of the current feast, where this is of obligation.
I don’t know if the CE has the requirements correct as of now.

DAY OF OBLIGATION OR NOT RELIES ON THE GOOD PRACTISING CATHOLIC

The church does not explicitely state that the day of the feast of All Souls should be a day of obligation but the individual can do that. It is amatter of the heart.

How one celebrates a holy day of oblication can be done in a similar way on other days not regarded as such. Feast of All Saints is believed to be a joyful day to celebrate while that of All Souls be a day of commemorating our dear departed friends, relatives and love ones, and to pray for them.

How you live these days and other feast days regarded as day of obligation or not depends on YOU.

As we commemorate the feast of All Souls, we pray that; May the divine assistance always remain always with us, and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God, rest in peace;

Maybe the contest in which I put that was wrong. However this is actually what I mean:

According to Canon Law 1247,
"On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. Moreover they are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body."

The Catholic Holy Days of Obligation however does not include 2nd November-All Souls Day. (beginningcatholic.com/catholic-holy-days-of-obligation.html)

All that I was trying to convey is that THE ACTIVELY PRACTICING CATHOLIC COULD MAKE SUCH A DAY, HIS OWN DAY OF OBLIGATION AND RECOGNIZE IT AS SUCH.

It’s such a great thing to do - Everyday being a day of obligation! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Clear?
