Saints Peter and Paul: Same feast day

What was the reason for having the Feast of St. Peter and the Feast of St. Paul put together as one feast day?
 
They both help found the Church of Rome, the Church the majority of Catholics are apart of and the Church all Catholics are in communion with.
 
I read a commentary a few days ago that combining feast days may have been in order to Christianize the pagan myth of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.
