I run a very small home-based business reselling books that I acquire at estate sales. Often I purchase large lots and in looking through them, I come across many older books that are Christian but not Catholic as well as copies of the KJV Bible. As a Catholic, I am hesitant to resell these or even to donate them to other Christian book sellers or organizations because of the danger of propagating heresy. My quandry is this: what should I do with these books, especially non-Catholic Bibles? The loss of my investment is not an issue. I am primarily concerned with disposing of them in an appropriate manner.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Give them to me! 😛

I think it depends on the item. I would never throw away books, even protestant works. Perhaps you should ask some Catholic friends (well grounded ones) if they would like to have some Protestant litterature. As for the KJVs, I don’t think that they would cause heresy. It was through the KJV that I became Catholic in my thinking. It may be a Protestant translation, but it’s a Catholic book.

Little known trivia…the KJV is based on the Douay-Rheims translation. The original King James Bible had the Deuterocanonical(sp?) books in the back as an appendix.

My first thought is that your “propogating heresy” concern would be more appropriate if heresy had just broken out and tere were a chance to defeat it – as it is protestantism appears to be here for some time to come. Second, you might want to check out books by non-Catholic Christians on a case-by-case basis. C.S. Lewis is excellent, books like 365 Bible Reflections (or whatever) are probably safe.

If you decide not to carry non-Catholic books or KJV Bibles you might consider donating them to a hospital or protestant chaplains in the amed services.

Do you have a store or do you sell by mail order? If you stock “christian” books you might have an opportunity to discuss your faith with your non-Catholic customers. If they order by mail, slip in a list of good Catholic titles w/ an offer of free shipping on their next order 😃

I would take it on a book by book basis. As others mentioned, KJV is not bad. Bibles with commentary that reflect heresy need to be burned. It shows respect for the word of God yet gets rid of potentially leading others astray.

Books that are Christian but not Catholic need to be evaluated book by book also. Any anti-catholic books should first be offered to any friends who are in apologetics and are strong in their faith as someone else mentioned. Otherwise, the garbage heap is where I would send them. Either that or burn them, not out of respect but so no one can ever use it again.

I disagree with donating them if they are contrary to Catholic teachings. Since you said money is not an issue, do what little you can to prevent heresy from spreading. Give them to a strong Catholic for apologetic purposes, burn 'em or throw them away. JMHO.

God Bless,
Maria

I personally don’t think I would let any of those out of my house. I don’t want to even look like I promote a non-Catholic position toward other people. I have several non-Catholic books, including a Book of Mormon, lots of Chick tracts, and KJV some Bibles in my house. I use these items to help back up my Catholic beliefs. I also use the Book of Mormon and KJV Bibles as reference tools when Mormon missionaries come by. It is good to know their position and how to refute it. It may not look like Protestantism is going to fizzle out anytime soon, but I don’t intend on prolonging its life… Pray for unity and conversions… And try to aid in them…

Blimey! You’d censor what books you think people can read without commiting heresey??? What ever happened to freedom of speech and freedom of expression?

When I returned to the Catholic Church after nine years in a couple of different Protestant groups/sects, I had shelves of books, many of which contained some pretty rotten heresies.

I asked the priest who lead my wife and I back home if I should throw them in the garbage? No, he said, out of respect for the people who put the work into making them. He did not say it out of respect for what had been written in them, but I think for the sincerity of the authors, as they believed what they were doing was right.

He said it was fitting that the books be burnt, reduced to ashes, rather than rotting in a dump for half a century.

I told him that I didn’t have the means to burn a whole stack of books myself, and he replied that he would be more than happy for me to bring them around so he could do the job himself.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

So I happily pass on this advice to you:

BURN THE LOT!!
