Anyone in sales out there? If so, are all sales positions commission based (at least partially)? I didn’t think so…I thought that certain sales positions could be hourly/salaried (solely).

I’m in sales, but business to business. Meaning, I’m paid a salary + bonuses…quarterly and yearly, the annual bonus based on sales. The quarterly based on performance. It is great to get into sales, and if you are good at what you do, you won’t have to worry about keeping your job, even in a recession. Afterall, companies need good salespeople generating revenue. I mean, no one is indispensable, but if you are productive in sales, then you should be able to keep your job in various economies. Are you thinking of sales, baylee?

Yeah, I think there can be different kinds of sales jobs. For instance, my postion is technically called “Sales” and my primary goal is to sell hotel rooms to individuals and businesses who want to book with my company. I do end up spending most of my time doing customer service or special requests or dealing with travel agents. I make an hourly wage + bonuses. Many major compaies will have entry level sales positions, even if it’s just in a call center somewhere making a wage plus incentives/bonuses. It’s a good way to start if you don’t want to jump right in to comission-based sales. 🙂

I would never ever advocate commission sales to anyone, in any economy. Reason being, if a company doesn’t want to invest in its employees with some type of base salary, then they are not committed to your success…and most likely, that company has a revolving door in its sales dept. Just my two cents. :o

My dh is in sales - 100% commission.

It is good and bad. When sales are good, it is great. When sales are bad, it can be really bad.

He is doing OK in this economy, though, as he has built up a sizable base after this many years.

I am…part-time…and it’s a career change for me. I’d rather not get into too much of the specifics, but the position is $8/hour plus a % of sales (on a sliding scale). I haven’t been offered the job, but I wonder whether this kind of arrangement is worth it. Of course, if I love the job perhaps that’s what I should be focusing on.

If you like what you do, it won’t feel like work.🙂 I do want to get paid well though too. lol

It might be worth it, and you might like it. 🙂

Not knowing exactly what the job is, it’s hard to say. All I can add is that I’ve worked many jobs with the same wage + comission bonus set-up that you describe and depending on the comapny it can be pretty hard to make more than your base wage, at least when you first start. When doing your budget, you might plan on just getting the
$8/h for the first few paychecks until you get your footing.

Then again…I could be completely wrong lol. Do you know any others who do this same job with this same company who you could talk to and get some inside-info from?

Unfortunately, no I do not.

I think what you have suggested is probably a good idea…since the whole selling thing would be so new to me. Of course, no one has offered me the job yet…so I’m definitely putting the cart before the horse…
