i wonder if other Spanish-influenced countries have the same tradition?

Salubong (or the meeting) is a celebration of Christ’s resurrection where two processions leave the church in early morning (4 or 5am, just before dawn). One procession is a statue of the Risen Lord as as depicted here:

and traditionally accompanied by the men

the second procession is of the Virgin Mary wearing dark clothes (black or dark purple) and a black veil, in mourning, and is traditionally accompanied by the women

now as the two processions head off in different directions, they eventually meet up again in front of the Church, where there is a high platform where usually a child dressed as an angel would lift the veil of the Virgin Mary as soon as she meets up (Salubong) with the Risen Christ

then the procession heads into the church for mass

now, i know scripture doesn’t support Jesus and the Virgin Mary meeting on the morning of Easter, but this sunday my parish priest mentioned that Franciscans have a theological opinion that Jesus first showed himself to His mother. but it was a private meeting and for that reason it was never mentioned in scripture. and if i remember my history correctly, most of the priests during Spain’s occupation of the Philippines were Franciscan friars.

but anyway, i thought i would share this

you can go to youtube and type “SALUBONG” to see videos

the photos are not mine, i just googled them

I was working on a project recently gathering Marian sermons with an Easter focus, and I was quite surprised to discover that there are a number of fathers/saints who have held, and a number of devotional books that mention the pious opinion that Jesus appeared first to the Virgin Mary, starting with St. Ambrose. And in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Catholic chapel is “Sacellum Appartionis Christi Resurgentis Matri Suae Mariae”. But this belief is also not unique to the Franciscans- St. Vincent Ferrer for example, also held it, and the Dominican have the option of reading a homily of his, on Saturdays, in the Liturgy of the Hours, which mentions this belief. In more recent times, John Paul II devoted one his audiences to explaining this belief though I can’t seem to find the link right now.
