I would first of all say thank you for supporting the SA.
How did I become a Reverend. Went to school and was granted the title after my studies. There are some who’s titles are Pastor, Reverend, Dr., Minister, and so on. In order to receive the title of Dr. it takes several years of study. Basically the titles of Pastor and Reverend are the same and only takes a few years of study. It all depends on your religious preference. Me being a non-dom preacher I was granted the title by Bishop McElory, Minister S.H. Edwards and Minister H.J Simpson on September 7, 2007.
I guess I could ask the same question that I don’t understand and that is why are Priests calle father?
How do you get the title Bishop

Look I’m not going to get caught up in this silly game of how did you get or how did they get their titles. It has nothing to do with the thread. So lets keep to what the thread is about.

There are always a few bad apples in every group. The SA is generally quite good. They screwed up here when a woman gave them a bunch of money in her will with the stipulation that they open an office in a nearby town. The SA said they could use the money however they wanted. It took a while, but they finally did open an office in that town. I don’t know if it was the law or the boycott that got them to do it. But anyway, now I can donate again. 🙂

There seem to be people who use the title reverend who have no visible role in any church. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson come to mind. There are ministers who are called reverend and priests, but reverend seems like it should be someone who has some leadership role in a church, but not always.

How did Bishop McElroy become a bishop? Did someone who had that title give him the title or office as well?

I’m sorry but to belittle a orinization or a non-Cahtolic church that does nothing but good is beyond me. By not helping them goes against what we were tought by or Savior. We are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give shelter to those who need it we are to love our neighbor. This doesn’t mean only if you are of the same religion. Remember the parable of the Good Samaritan. Did he say that because he was of a different religion he don’t deserve my help. NO as a matter of fact his own religion didn’t lift a finger to help him. But to say because were Catholic they don’t deserve our help seem shelfish and unChristian like. May I ask a aquestion, How many non-Catholics has the Catholic church helped. Did they turn them away because they were not Catholic. How many non-Catholics donate to the Catholic church to help with the food pantries and such. They didn’t say Oh there Catholic so they don’t deserve of help. They help because that is the right and Chrisitan thing to do. Helping others has no religious boundries. We may differ in our beliefs but when it comes to helping those in need we do not and should not differ. I believe that we all could learn from this Catholic High School in what it means to help others in need. Not helping is not only self-centered but selfish to say the least.
Actually not helping a specific charitable group does not in any way shape or form violate any teaching of Christ. The OP was not belittling, he was asking if they should be supported due to the fact that they are an entirely different religious organization, and not simply a charity. It becomes a moral question.

I am not interested in any silly games, but am honestly curious about things. I have many friends who go to nondenominational churches. I always wondered who started them and why. I wondered why they thought they had the authority to start their own church. The Bible does not give anyone the authority to do this who gets the notion that it would be a good idea to start a church and appoint yourself its leader.

If you had gone to a Christian seminary you would know the answer to that question.

I’m Catholic, and I think the Catholic Church is “closest” to the truth. But I also think God’s got a soft spot for the Salvos. Just a sense.

Likewise I think He’s got, or had, a soft spot for the Irish, who have probably done more to spread the Catholic Church’s influence than anybody else. That is apart from the strong support they gave to the Catholic Church even in early medieval evangleism, their monastic movement in the middle ages, and the strong role the Church has played in their society.

With modern consumerism, I think the Irish might be losing that Paternal affection, but I still think God’s got a soft spot for the Salvos.

I think they are beginning to “sell out” to the secularists.

I passed their national headquarters just today. I saw no reference to Christ whatsoever in their decorations. I question where some of the money is going, as I have heard rumors of their giving money to organizations that, let’s just say, go against Christianity.

Also, if it doesn’t promote the organization’s interests, they are not interested in helping. I helped at a homeless organization that procured resources for people, and they never helped.

I am contributing directly to orgainizations I know truly help the poor and haven’t politicied themselves. They have begun to “rest on their laurels” and have lost the vision of their founder.

Then again, what do I know?

Interesting, as a Rev. I would expect you to know the answer to that. I will give you a quickie history lesson. About 150 years ago many Protestant leaders were called “Father” When the Catholics starting calling their priests “Father” the Protestants stopped because they did not in any way want to be identified with the Catholic Church. Then it suddenly became unbiblical to use that title. As a Rev. you should also know that there are many cases in the bible where they are called “Father” Do a search here as we have had many threads on this. Cheers!

The SA is a good organization. Any one who helps our brothers and sisters is deserving of our help and Catholic giving is blind as to religion.

Maybe it is a good thing Australia is so far from Ireland. If you had been reading about the Church in Ireland for the last two weeks you might change your sentimental opinion.

When i was a kid. I heard the salvo’s coming around for donations. You could hear their music coming from blocks away. I remember saying to my old grandfather a devout catholic. “uh ooo hide ya money here comes the slavo’s” And my grandfather gave me the biggestear bashing he ever gave me. He told me how in ww2 during Australias darkest hour. When he was fighting the japanesse on the kakoda track. With them right on our door step and with the majority of our army in africa fighting rommel. He said you could be walking along the mountain tracks. And there would be some salvo with a warm although he said often cold cup of tea. And a few kind words and a ear to listen to his troubles. He said you don’t have to go to their church. But you do have to respect them around me. My mother said that after dad died. They were the first there to offer help. No preaching nothing just help.As i grew older and wised up a bit. i tend to agree with them on the fact the salvo’s do a lot of good work. God bless all the salvo’s. I think if there was no Catholisim. I would gladly become a salvo too.

I don’t contribute to Salvation Army because of their postion on Abortion. See below:

The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters states their position clearly:

[Salvation Army] accepts that termination of a pregnancy may be justified on certain limited grounds; that is, where, in the judgment of competent medical and allied staff, the pregnancy poses a serious threat to the life of the mother, or could result in irreversible physical injury to the mother.

In cases of proven rape or legally defined incest an abortion may be justified because of the extent to which rape and incest violate the whole person. Termination of a pregnancy may also be justified where
reliable diagnostic procedures determine that a foetal [sic] abnormality is present which is incompatible with life other than brief post-natal survival or where there is total absence of cognitive function.

I have nothing but praise for the Salvation Army. They walk in where angels fear to tread and treat anyone irrespective of race or creed. I know of their work also with giving shelter to trafficked women in great need where no one else came forward. May they continue in the wonderful work they are doing.

I spoke with a friend of mine who’s a member of the Salvation Army and when i told him of your post he told me that he’s never heard of anyone who was turned away due to a lack of money. They would only be turned away if they are being unruly or in possession of illegal substances. Are you sure it was a salvation army related shelter??
Haha or he could have had a gun on him… or worse :p:D

Many years ago, when I was a college student in a small town in the Eastern U. S., I was part of a telephone “hotline” that provided referrals, advice, and sometimes just a listening ear to people in trouble. During a recession, less severe, but much like the current one, our funding was withdrawn, and we had to close, but a group of us, convinced that our services were needed, tried to reactivate it. We searched all over town, calling on businesses, churches of all denominations, including the local Catholic church, and businesses, seeking some space to operate, nothing more. All turned us down flat.

Then I went to the Salvation Army. Before I could finish my pitch to the Captain in charge, he interrupted me and asked, “When would you like to start?” Then he said, “Let’s see if we can find you some space,” and he did. Yes, they did ask us to contribute something for rent. They have a strong belief that those who can contribute something, should, but our budget was so tight, that we simply couldn’t. Despite our lack of contribution, they let us stay. We counseled many people there, and we even saved some lives. That’s how the Salvation Army works.

Today, I am a Deacon in the Catholic Church, but I will not pass a Red Kettle without contributing to the Salvation Army. They say, “Need knows no season,” and that’s true. Good works aren’t always done by Catholics. Remember the Parable of the Good Samaritan.

I think some of these preachers think the title bishop has a nice ring to it so they run down to the print shop and get some cards and stationary printed up. I know one guy who says all the word bishop means is elder, so I am the elder senior minister in my salvation shop who signed the lease so therefore I am a bishop.
