In my city a dozen churches including the SA join together to run a food shelf, located in our church basement, a homeless shelter located in a nearby city ( about 20 miles distant ), aid to transients who need food, gas, or a motel room (we are on a major Interstate highway). A dozen local churches take turns providing a free meal to all comers one Thursday of each month. They are all held in the hall of one of our local Lutheran churches. Same place, same time every month. When it comes to ringing the SA bells most of the local churches provide volunteers at different times and locations. The SA headquarters is in a city 20 miles away and in 40 years I have yet to see an identifiable SA person manning the kettles in this town. There is no faith test for any of these charitable acts, nor is anyone required to attend a religious service to receive help. The SA is one of the major contributers to charitable works in our area, no strings attached. I suspect that depending on its officers SA practices differ a great deal from local to local.

I have been generous in the past to Salvation Army.
However, acc. to the link below, they are not against abortion in the case of rape, incest or fetal deformity. Further some of their branches(not the national specifically) funnels or makes donations to Planned parenthood. Further, some local branches share office space/accomodations with Plannned Parenthood branches.

I always figured Salvation Army was a safe and good way to spend a few dollars towards helping since St. Vincent De Paul and Catholic Charites et al, all are needed in helping the homeless, but this Planned Parenthood thing or even Salvation Army giving to United Way is a deal breaker.
Its hard to be a Catholic in this society.
Even the local Supermarket Vons has charity drives at the cash register once a month or more often. Rarely if you give to anything that Vons is directing money to will it not go to either Planned parenthood, embryonic stem cell research or a host of other evil practices all in the name of advancing or finding a cure for this or that disease. Frequently this or that particular disease charity drive is just serving as a funneling operation to many of the same familar charity/research orgs but under a different banner.
…And you can’t explain to the secular or protestant cashier why Why WHY? – you as a Catholic are getting that de ja vu’ feeling of living in Hitlers Reich and the culture of death is permeating everything all around you.

Thank you for commenting. I can see that it does vary from location to location in some matters, but overall I get the feeling that the things this Army is supporting is something I can do without.
They do good things, but with a price tag I won’t pay.

There are good and bad in every charity orginization, yes even in the Catholic charity part.
Who is the first ones there to feed and cloth people when a desaster happens. SA.
I don’t see a Catholic charity doing this.
You can only go to a Catolic pantry for food once every 6 months, must have a ID, a valid place to live, a SSN for every person in your family children included, a utility in your name. and proof of income I know I have been there for help. If you don’t have these things you got no help.
You only need yourself to get help from the SA. You don’t need a ID, SSN, place of your own, or utility in your name, or proof of income to get food. You can go once a week for food. And you don’t have go promise to go to their church or listen to any preaching. I know I have been there for help, my wife rang bells for them and I personally know the Major of our local SA.
Who stands out in the middle of winter, when its freezing out side ringing bells10-12 and sometimes 16 hours a day to help the needy, The SA. I don’t see a Catholic charity doing this.
Now like I said there are good points and bad points to every charity. I don’t see it a big deal if they chose not to give out Harry Potter or Twilight things. I don’t see it immoral in any, way, shape or forum. But yes they should inform what kind of toys are acceptiable. Our local SA does.

Not true. The food pantry at our parish gives out food, no questions asked, to anyone who comes and asks for it. Please don’t say that you know because you have “been there for help.” There are thousands of Catholic food pantries and you have not been to every single one. Of course this poster is completely unaware of how many catholics are on this board. You and many others know he is trying to discount the wonderful efforts catholics make to all people, of all races and beliefs or lack of.
He can name the Bishop in charge of his Diocese so we can investigate his charges.

The Salvation Army has become controversial in the past decade or so. Perhaps it was before this time, and I just wasn’t aware of it, I dunno. But one thing I have gleaned from different opinions which I have read is that individual Salvation Army chapters sometimes have policies and practices which differ from the standards of the national organization.
That seems to be the case with the Calgary chapter of Salvation Army. Shortly after the news of the toy decision was announced, Canada’s national Salvation Army issued a press release stating that the Calgary policy was not national policy.
So perhaps the takeaway lesson from this is that you may want to learn about your local chapter and its policies. Or donate to the national organization, rather than to the bell ringers. Or perhaps donate to another poverty/disaster relief organization.
