Salvation - Contradictory Councils?

Thanks all - great info!

Similarly - when we believe the Spirit protects the Church from error - do we believe it’s impossible for a Pope or Council to declare something ridiculous and bind Christians to it?

Just thinking of the ridiculous example of a Pope or Council declaring “The sky is green” and the faithful being bound to accept it. Can someone speak more on this?
 
Since we believe the Church is protected by the Holy Spirit, a Pope would not/could not speak from the chair a falsehood that he binds to the faithful.
 
I guess a good way to think of it would be “What if Peter said something ridiculous while preaching at Pentecost?”
