I have something that I cannot find the answer to…perhaps one of the former LDS or current LDS members can help me out. How does a woman, on her own, attain salvation in the Mormon Church? From what I understand, a woman is called forth by her temple name, by her deceased husband and if they were both in good standing (do they have to be in good standing at their deaths…or just at one time?) then he will be a god and she will be his wife (good enough) and they will reign over a new world. What happens when a woman predeceases her husband? Where does she go? What happens if her husband forgets her temple name? Any help would be appreciated.

Mormons-women and men–beleive that they are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Take care with this however–Mormonism is purely Pelegian in it’s theology–is 'by grace through faith AFTER AL YOU CAN DO". (II Nephi 25: 23).

What you have heard about, actually, is the doctrine of eternal progression: one needs to be married to eternally progress and achieve to the stature which God the Father now possesses. Hence, Mormons have temples–places of restricted access, where only faithful LDS can go. In those places, living men and women are ‘sealed’ to one another “for time and for eternity”. And–ordinances for the dead are also performed there, so that good Catholics(as an example) who never accept the LDS ‘gospel’, can avail themselves of the opportunity to do so in ‘spirit prison’, the place of confinement for all non-LDS deceased. (Mormons go to Paradise to await the Millenium, but can visit spirit prison to proclaim the Gospel there). It is only in this sphere of existence, this lifetime, that ‘ordinancnes’ such as baptism can be performed, and so the temples provide a place where such work can be done ‘in proxy’ on behalf of those who received no such ordinances while living.

LDS women who perish unmarried–or unmarried LDS men likewise–can be ‘sealed’ by proxy to someone acting on their behalf in this life. It will be up to them to decide if they accept such sealing–though such a decision might involve restricting their ability to progress eternally. I’ve heard it remarked that since such people are being sealed to ‘model’ LDS–people who would be loving, considerate, kind, gentle, virtuous, intelligent, possessed of a ‘glorified body’ which would presumably be extremely attractive, and so forth–they should have few objections to being sealed to such a person if they truly seek eternal progression. Seems a simplistic view but I’m not claiming it is ‘official teaching’, just a comment I heard once.

So, there is no salvation through Jesus Christ for a person who is not married? Well, actually, I guess there is no salvation through Jesus Christ for any mormom because it is their work - progression - that they are able to enter into a higher heaven. Do I ‘get that’ correctly? It seems to me that they have to rely on another person to get them to where they are going…i.e. baptism of the dead so that the deceased can attain a higher level. Hmmm…I don’t get it.

Actually: everyone who is not a Mormon apostate or a murderer or an adulterer is ‘already saved’ in LDS theology–to either the telestial, terrestrial, or celestial kingdom. This follows the Second Coming of Christ and the Milenium. However, the rest of us languish in Spirit Prison unless and until we accept the Gospel from a visiting Mormon–and unless and until someone performs the ‘ordinances’ for us, including sealing us to a spouse. Only those of us who achieve the ‘celestial’ kingdom can experience eternal progression.

Actually I should not use the phrase “us”: I am an apostate–a former Latter-Day Saint. So I get to spend eternity in Outer Darkness with Lucifer/Satan, the demons, and unrepentant adulterers (unless I repent in this life in time to atone for my unfaithfullness). Murderers get it really tough: they are deemed to have committed the ‘blasphemy of the Holy Spirit’. They must not only fully repent but must also consent to be executed in a manner which causes their blood to spill onto the ground in atonement for taking a human life without just cause. This is the only way they get to escape eternity in ‘Outer Darkness.’

Of course since ‘eternity’ and ‘endless’ are not measures of time, but are proper names for God (Doctrine and Covenants 19:10-12, Moses 1:3, 7:35)–there’s no real telling how long I would actually have to spend in “Outer Darkness”. The topic has come up in Priesthood meetings a couple of times, and once in a Fireside (informal gathering at someone’s home). Some LDS toy with Origen’s idea that in the end, even Satan will be redeemed . . . .

Mormonism places great stress upon SELF-RELIANCE, but some things are beyond what one can do alone. This life is the proper time to hear the gospel and receive the ordiancnes of the LDS Church for oneself. If one perishes without doing this, one usually gets a ‘second chance’ (except as noted a moment ago) while in Spirit Prison. It will not be ‘as easy’ to accept the Gospel in Spirit Prison, and one will have specially-difficult obstacles to overcome. Those who choose in this life to accept the Gospel may get quite a head start on you in their own eternal progression. BUT conversions after this life ARE possible in LDS teaching, hence the performance of proxy baptisms, temple sealings, and so forth for as many deceased folks as the LDS can garner names for.

If “eternal” is not a measure of time(and it’s not) then “eternal progression” is an oxymoron. Or, should I say oxymormon"?

Flames,

Wow! You were taught different theology then I was. I was taught all through childhood that the only people that could go to hell(outer darkness) were people that KNEW the truth but rejected it anyway…Judas comes to mind here. Murdering, adultery, etc. simply put one in the telestial kingdom. (sounds like were discussing the rules for Dungeons and Dragons rather then theology. But, that’s Mormonism for ya!) 😉

Thanks for the great explanation… I hope that you realize that the Catholic Church could offer you peace and relief from the burden your carrying around with regards to your involvement with the LDS. Best regards…

There really is no salvation for a Mormon women. When they are ‘saved’ they just go to their husbands planet with all his other wives and and become just another one of his baby making machines.:bigyikes: Being pregnent for enternity with all the back aches and morning sickness not to mention the serving your god (husband) with back rubs, waiting in line behind his other wives to see him, etc. is not my idea of salvation. It’s more like eternal slavery and misery?:whacky:

Just an opinion though!

I have known several Mormon people and several who have left the Mormon faith and I have seen how this religion is truly a cult that serves only the purposes of the men. In my view, the very first commandment is broken by the fact that they see the men as future gods, equal to Jesus in power.

In terms of the salvation of women, in the book, The Godmakers (written by former Mormons) it states that Utah has the highest rate of spousal abuse with the women as being abused due to the fact that women rely on their husbands for their salvation and they do not want to upset their husbands or leave as they will not be saved. This is in direct violation of what Jesus taught. He called Mary Magdalene, an unmarried woman who was not favored by most, to follow him. She was saved. I believe this was his example to all women that they can be saved by their own faith.

It is by faith that we are saved and not by who we marry. I shudder to think of all the women that suffer believing their salvation rests in their husbands’ hands and what they are missing in life- a relationship with a loving Jesus who wants nothing more than to bring them closer to him. The men in the Mormon religion are preventing their wives from a true relationship with Jesus, a clear indicator that they are not Christian, and a clear indicator it was created by man as what more than Mormonism to bring up a man’s ego and have a servant for a wife?!

We need to pray for all of the Mormons, but especially the women.

I’m sure at some point one of teh LDS members will help you out.

Chimakuni,
As I read posts on this website I often think of the scene in the Wizard of Oz when Toto pulls the curtain and we see the guy behind the curtain. So much of what is posted is completely wrong, particularly about Mormonism and LDS beliefs. The guy who thinks he qualified to be a “son of Perdition” has no idea what he’s talking about, since obviously he has elementary knowledge and that means he doesn’t qualify as rejecting Christ and the revelation by the Holy Ghost that Christ is the Redeemer, with full and sure knowledge of what he is doing in that rejection–which he doesn’t have.

The first resurrection generally happens at the beginning of the Millenium when Christ returns, so all the people who are qualified to receive Celestial glory will be resurrected at that time, and whether the wife or the husband died first makes absolutely no difference since both will have been in the spirit world after their respective deaths, and will be there together along with other family members and with many, many friends and loved ones.

Memories are completely restored in the spirit world, so memory loss is not an issue at all. (Repentance requires memory “restoration” for everyone, everywhere, who ever lived.)

What was happening when a person dies really does count as far as what their ultimate resurrected state will be, but if there were misunderstandings God will no doubt allow for repentance having to do with misunderstandings as opposed to completely knowledgeable choices and actions that were contrary to covenants. God intends for covenants to be binding promises that are kept, with faith in Christ and love for others at the center of keeping those covenants so that forgiveness can bring the healing balm Christ offers to all.

Single women through no fault of their own will evidently have the opportunity to marry during the Millenium, and will be able to make their own choice about a worthy companion such as all the millions of little children who died before reaching age eight who will also be able to marry and receive the Celestial kingdom. No one will have a condition of marriage that they don’t want. There won’t be assigned marriages, nor “plural marriages” beyond those that occurred in this world under the sealing power when such was authorized by God at a period of time in history.

So often false teachings become the object of scorn and derision about the whole idea of “eternal marriage.” When Paul wrote “neither the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord”, he knew what he was talking about in the sense of completing Heavenly Father’s plan for His children.

Chimakuni,
Salvation will always be through Jesus Christ, and through no other way. It is the same for unmarried people as for married people, but as I had noted earlier unmarried people if they chose away from marriage made a choice that was theirs to make. It means marriage is not going to be forced on them, and they receive the state of happiness in the resurrection that they desired and lived for by their choices in life.

You seem to have confused the idea of a “sealing ordinance” (which the apostles had the keys and authority to perform in Christ’s day–at least Peter, James, and John did since they received the visit from Elijah and Elias on the Mount of Transfiguration) with a “work” that is done by a person that excludes Christ from their progress. Christ is always at the center of any ordinance or covenant or progress that people make as they enter into those ordinances and covenants and keep them.

Baptism for the dead is an act of service by the living in behalf of a person who died, in a similar way that any act of service helps another person. Christ taught that acts of service are part of the gospel, not foreign to the gospel.

For any reading this, please be aware that an idea that was presented on this thread that “spirit prison” is where “any non-Mormon” will go after this life, is simply wrong unless the person writing meant “paradise without the Holy Spirit”, since the Holy Ghost is given by the laying on of hands by one in authority. But many, many people will be in Paradise with their loved ones, who lived good lives and kept the Ten Commandments. There is teaching in both places–Paradise and spirit prison.

Ok, first of all, all of you catholic posters need to research before you act. You cannot post something that is not true!!Just because you are not that denomination does not mean you need to act like they’re completely wrong! When something is posted about mormonism on this website it gets like 1,000 views when other posts get 300. I dont understand why everyone is searching to shoot down the LDS church. Have some compassion for your fellow christians!

Parker,

In reference to women who were single in this life, ‘Women through no fault of their own,’
your use of language implies they have a grave moral disorder.

‘Through no fault of their own’, is language of the U S Bishops in reference to homosexual orientation, and this use of language was copied by the Mormon church.

Kathleen Gee,

I wrote what I wrote without even knowing about the “language of the U S Bishops”. Those words could be written by anyone on any number of subjects, and not be “copying” the language of the U S Bishops.

Here were the sentences:

Single women through no fault of their own will evidently have the opportunity to marry during the Millenium, and will be able to make their own choice about a worthy companion such as all the millions of little children who died before reaching age eight who will also be able to marry and receive the Celestial kingdom. No one will have a condition of marriage that they don’t want.

“Through no fault of their own” means they didn’t choose to be single, but were following the standard order of how these things happen in this life (i.e., a woman doesn’t usually go out and choose a husband and ask him to marry her–even though she may want to marry a worthy man, she hopes and probably prays that “he will find her” and doesn’t “hide away” but lets the man do the asking.)

I hope this has clarified the issue you seemed to be confused about.

Peace and good day.

Parker,

Thanks for your clarification.

But there is always a counter point to the issue of Mormon women…Mother Theresa, and countless women like her down through the ages, who never married but had many ‘spiritual’ children who were restored to their Heavenly Father through Jesus.
