Below is a response I received from a Protestant Family Member. The discussion beginning on “Faith Alone”. I would like to know your thoughts on an effective way to rebut his contentions.
Well I listened to the1st hour and 1/2 and stopped when the catholic gentlemen stated " I’m saved when I keep the commandment’s" This is works righteous , which you have stated over and over you don’t believe . If the scripture is God’s word whether 66 books or 73 they clearly teach that Christ is the author and finisher of our faith, Faith generated by God and reveled by the Holy Spirit. I will continue to believe in Christ alone and Scripture alone if that scripture being only one Gospel and one Epistle and faith alone . It’s not the amount but what is interpreted as truth.
As was pointed out the Church has been anything but infallible and likewise the Pope going back to Peter who failed to be infallible in Acts when he showed partially to the Jews and separated himself. So Im going to use an illustration below to show why I can not accept the Catholic view.
The Catholics believe you are regenerated at/by Baptism , then when I sin I fall out of the regenerated state until go to confession / penitence. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Here’s the illustration. I go to confession and have absolution and walk out in the street and there in front of me walks a beautiful, well built ,scantily dress married woman , I say in my mind that I sure would like to spend 20 minutes in bed with her. At that moment a car veers off the street and run me over and kills me .
The way I would see it is you as a Catholic would be guilt before God and destine to eternal damnation.
My view of scripture is by faith in the finished work of Christ I still inherit eternal life because it is not based on my doing everything right every moment but being sealed with Christ. 2d Cor. 1: 20-22 , Eph 1:13-14. This covers Mortal sin and not the sins of omission that I fail at every day and just as unholy to a Holy God as the above, for God says to be ye holy as I AM holy.
I have peace with God in the statement " just shall live be faith".
Food for thought!.
