Well, I think that depends on who you are talking to. There will be some rc’s who say there is NO salvation outside the rcc, and then you will find some prots who say unless rc’s leave the rcc they won’t be saved.

The catechism states that there is salvation for all of those who seek God and applies it not only to Catholic Christians, but also to other Christians, Jews, Muslims, and persons of other faiths. This reminded me of how Ghandi said, “I like their Christ, but not their Christians.” Sometimes we make it harder for other people to accept Christ because we portrayed Him incorrectly. However, all is not lost. Christ lives in the heart of every person who loves his neighbor as himself and loves his God. I forget which saint commented on it, but even pagans were applauded for their desire to know God without Him having revealed Himself to them. The Church is not in the business of damnation, but salvation. The good each person decides to act on is an act of God’s goodwill, for all good things come from Him and likewise return to Him.

The phrase “no salvation outside the Catholic Church” is frequently misinterpreted to mean that no one can be saved unless they are received into the RCC. But as the Catechism and many papal letters and synod and council documents make clear, the reality is that since there is only “One Body, One Spirit, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, One God and Father of us all” (Ephesians 4) all who are saved (by grace!) are part of the Church - whether or not they are formally received and in fact whether or not they recognize the Church as the Church.

So it’s not so much that you can’t be saved except if you’re catholic but that you can’t be not catholic if you are saved. (And yes, I did use the lower-case “c” on purpose, not to be disrespectful but to emphasize the “universal” point.)
