Not sure this is the proper place to ask but here goes. Does the church teach that there is more than one avenue to the Father other than Jesus Christ? Example, Say a Buddhist or another religion other that Christianity has morally good people that help one another and live a life pleasing to God but do not recognize Jesus as Savior. Is that person eternally condemned in the eyes of the church?

I agree.

I want to add that the three major religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam) believe in the same God. We catholics believe that Jesus is the son of God and is also God. Therefore, I believe that by believing in God followers of Judaism and Islam can be saved since God is the Son and Jesus is merciful. We can’t forget that Jesus was Jewish. However, other religions such as buddhism don’t believe in God and are only idolaters and cannot be saved if offcourse they have knowledge of Jesus and his teachings, otherwise if they were raised in this religion and don’t know anything else they can be considered ignorant and thus free of sin.

The Church is the only way to salvation that is known to man.

From the Catechism:

2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.

This certainly suggests there may be other avenues available for those who die in mortal sin to achieve salvation. However, none are known to man, nor should any such possible avenue be relied upon to the expense of the Church.

Church teaching:
  • Baptism is NECESSARY for salvation (but does not ensure it)
  • There is no salvation outside the Catholic Church
How can someone be baptised and a Catholic?
  • Sacramental Baptism as a Catholic
  • Baptism of Blood (non-Catholic dying for the Catholic faith)
  • Baptism of desire - Explicit (those who want to know more about Christ and have the desire to get baptised but die before scaramental baptism - e.g.those in RCIA)
  • Baptism of Desire - Implicit (those who may (not will) be saved through invincible ignorance meaning those who through no fault of their own do not know Christ, his Gospel and his Church but nevertheless in that ignorance still live a life in accordance with Christ’s teachings)
Outside the above four forms of baptism there is no salvation.

Not all Catholics are saved but everyone who is in Heaven is Catholic.

We are saved by Jesus Christ of Nazareth the Son of God.

Even those who with out fault do not know Christ
and his Church…who in a way known by God
are saved…it is Christ who will save them…and
not apart from the Church either…

I sense a little hostility and by no means intended to offend anyone with my question. I think, being new and still learning, that is was a legitimate question. Thank you everyone very much for your answers.

Thank you very much for the responses. I did not mean to upset anyone with my question but being new to Catholicism, I had to ask.

Is it only a baptism of blood if one dies for the catholic faith? Because I was told that in heaven are (many) people who were atheist but were able to go to heaven because they gave their life in order to save someone else’s life.

You may want to read about “invincible ignorance.”

The key word, is, IMO, is invincible. One who knows at least something, but chooses to ignore God may not have invincible ignorance.

It is impossible for any of us to know for sure what is the mind and heart of another, but it is possible for some to have invincible ignorance of God and His Living Son Jesus Christ.

It is dying for the faith, not for a person.

CCC 1258 The Church has always held the firm conviction that those who suffer death for the sake of the faith without having received Baptism are baptized by their death for and with Christ. This Baptism of blood, like the desire for Baptism, brings about the fruits of Baptism without being a sacrament.
