In converting to the Church I’ve tried to find an answer about this topic that satisfies me but I haven’t found one. What is the Church’s teaching on good works and their economy in the work of salvation? I know that at the Council of Trent the Church reaffirmed that we are saved by our works, but, I am still confused about this. Is there anywhere I could find information about this topic? Such as the Cathecism?

Q786. Christ is said to have saved us. What does saved mean?

A. “A man is saved who is free forever from the prospect of going to the eternal misery of hell. The soul that is saved has necessarily been separated from the earthly life of probation, and has gone either to purgatory for a time, or immediatly to the eternal happiness of heaven.”

Actually, Trent said the EXACT opposite in the very first Canon on Justification
CANON I.-If any one saith, that man may be justified before God by his own works, whether done through the teaching of human nature, or that of the law, without the grace of God through Jesus Christ; let him be anathema. .
But rather the Works are the active participation of ourselves in our Faith.

Works without Faith are meaningless, Faith without Works cannot save.

And unlike the Protestants, the Catholics view works as a conscience particpation. Namely we can freely choose to do them, or not to do them. We we choose not to do them, it kills our Faith. When we choose to do works in Christ, as a PART of our Faith, we gain treasure in heaven.

Matthew 25 is a great example of the Catholic understanding of Faith. With Faith, we see Christ in others. But it is only when we make a Free Will choice, after seeing Christ in others through Faith, to do meritorious works, do we gain salvation.

Faith alone does not do it, those are the goats, Works alone does not acomplish Salvation, they merit nothing. Only by Freely Choosing Faith, and Freely Choosing Works together can we gain the Grace of Salvation.

It’s sort of like this.

A child is in the store with her father. The child sees a toy that she wants. She says to her father, “Father, if I clean my room, will you buy me this?”
“No,” he says, "you cannot earn it by doing work.
She asks again, “Father, if I wash the kitchen floor, will you buy me this?”
“No,” he once more replies. “You can do nothing to earn that toy. However, I will give it to you as a gift on your birthday.”
The child becomes excited. “Oh thank you father,” she exclaims.
“Remember though,” says the father, “you must behave, and do what I tell you. If you do not, then I will not give you the gift!”
The child agrees. A week later, the father tells the child to clean her room. She does so. Another day, she is told that she must wash the kitchen floor. This too she does. Finally, on her birthday, her father gives her the toy.

Did the girl earn the gift by doing these chores? No, it was a gift. Nevertheless, she still needed to do the chores.

I think that I can help with this one. We are not saved by works, and the church has never taught that we are. We are saved by God’s grace. This is why the thief on the cross, who asks for forgiveness is granted it by Christ.

How do works fit into it? Well, at the point we accept Christ we are all saved in doing so. However, unlike the thief on the cross we all have our lives to live out. To do so properly, we manifest our faith through our works and our meritorious actions toward others. This is how we show the presence of God in our lives. Had the theif on the cross lived through it, he too would have been expected to live out his life in this manner.

Jesus is very clear in indicating this many times. What is never clear is the Protestant view of faith alone. Many Protestants, certainly not all of them, think that once you accept Christ that you are saved no matter what. This is clearly not the case in scripture.

Thanks. Good Luck!!!
