Can two people within the same Confirmation group have the same saint name?

For example, I’d choose the saint name “Anthony,” but apparently someone else claimed the name. So, is it possible?

I would really like to know. Thank you.

Yes, having the same name as someone else is fine. Consider that if your given name was Bob and someone else in the class was named Bob, it wouldn’t be a problem, right?

Besides, with a lot of names there are multiple saints. If you take Anthony, for example, there’s the famous Franciscan, there’s Anthony of the Desert, and perhaps a bunch of others. So you and the other person may be looking at completely different saints.

There are always more than one Mary, Francis, Peter and Paul. Unless there are only a couple of people receiving the Sacrament.

When I made my confirmation many years ago, as a 12 year old, there must have been 150 of us.
As I came from an Italian and Irish neighborhood, you can be sure there were many Anthonys, Josephs and Marys chosen for confirmation names. Please speak to your priest if someone is telling you that names cannot be repeated in a class/group.

Absolutely! It’s totally fine. There were a couple “Theresa’s” at my Confirmation last year 🙂
