So I’ve been struggling with SSA for years and I’ve felt the emptiness that comes with giving myself over to it. I’ve decided to fully embrace my faith and some of my “friends” have shunned me for it; saying things like “but don’t you wanna be happy?” Etc. I’m not sure how to explain to ppl that denying myself and living for God’s will for my life is more important to me than my own desires. Seems like everyone thinks they know what will make me happy. And besides, is happiness really everything?

I really need your advice and thoughts on this.

Ah but happiness is but a fleeting emotion, and can caused by so many different things. A good movie, time with friends, a birthday party, a silly dog video.

Joy is deeper. It’s something that envelops you, and something you can show the world by who you are, and who you become. Things can still make you happy or sad, but internal joy will still be there. Despite what the world says, and despite what crosses we carry, the best way to find and be filled with joy is through God.

Chastity is not an easy virtue to acquire, regardless of orientation.
But you’re not alone in following this path. The world may make you think you’re the only person striving for this virtue, but you’re not. A lot of people are, but they don’t necessarily talk about it.

People always use the happy quote.

It’s no different to a woman leaving her husband and the husband having to lead a chaste life, people would say about him marrying someone lese to be happy.

When your friends are telling you what makes you happy, they are really just telling you what makes them happy.

Your friends just want what they perceive as being the best for you. Reassure them that you are happy. Then ask them not to bring it up again if it makes you uncomfortable to discuss it.

Part of maturity is doing what you personally think is right for you, and not being concerned with friends’ opinions in general.

Some people get critical or skeptical when someone else doesn’t want to live as they themselves are doing, because it calls their own choices into question. Also, the current culture perceives it as normal to have sexual relations regularly. Anyone who decides they don’t want to do that, or prioritize something else like God as more important than sex, is going to get pushback. I feel like I get this myself in the heterosexual context all the time.

Just ignore others’ opinions and try to do what God wants.

To follow Christ includes people shunning you and not understanding. The Lord said we are blessed when this happens.
We are only called to do so much, convincing others of truth isn’t one of them. We’re called to live virtuously, pray for our enemies, and share our wealth and time to help people less fortunate. It’s between God and them if they come to understand. Our Lord loves them dearly, and will do everything within goodness to call them home. We must trust Him on that.

Thank you so much for your advice and insight. I guess my follow up question is, what do you say when they say “I just want you to be happy” as if that should be the sole basis behind making such a decision.

I get wierd looks when people ask me if I will have any more children and I answer if it happens it happens.

They see having children as something you control, making a decision when to have a child using contraception.
