Bishop Gomez of Denver has been named the new Archbishop of San Antonio! It would not be at all surprising if he were to be Cardinal Gomez in a very few years.

Is this official? I’ve heard these rumours for a while now. I’ll meet him in a few weeks for the first time. Busy fellow! Denver will miss him if he goes.

I’ve been looking into moving to San Antonio…is this a good thing, or a bad thing for a conservative orthodox Catholic?

I’m just trying to get a feel for the Catholic community in San Antonio…

Thanx,

Yes, it’s official. It was announced this morning in Rome along with the other US changes.

David, do you know where to get the info on all the US changes?

The changes to Galveston-Houston (became an archdiocese) can be found on this thread.

The other bishop changes (La Crosse, Saginaw, and San Antonio) can be found here.

Of course you can always refer to my web site too 🙂

I live in Austin, so this change afftecs me little (now belonging to the archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, instead of the much closer San Antonio).

Archbishop Gomez, a Mexican-born Opus Dei priest, is an excellent choice for San Antonio. His credentials look much better than my future archbishop’s, Bishop DiNardo, to the point of envy. 🙂 But I don’t really know either.

I did get to go to a Mass by Archbishop Flores a couple of months ago in New Braunfels and all I’ll say is that I appreciate better a homily on the readings of the day, instead of on Fallujah… 😦

God bless the outgoing bishops and the newcoming ones.
