North County high school could be casualty of diocese’s cuts

SAN DIEGO – A $198 million settlement in 2007 ended years of litigation against the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, but the church continues to feel the effects of the sexual abuse scandal.

Victim advocates say those who suffered sexual abuse may never completely heal. Meanwhile, the settlement’s financial costs have begun to affect church projects, among them a plan to build a new Catholic high school in northern San Diego County. Land that the church once viewed as a potential site for the campus will be sold, with the proceeds going to help pay the settlement, a diocese official said.

How will this effect Catholic Answers?:confused:
 
I am sorry, I am a very dedicated Catholic, however this still burns me to no end. You know we are taught, “Confession, Confession, Confession” However when these priest were caught, what does the church do (or did in San Diego) they covered it up, at that point it made the church responsible. They should have made the priest fess up and take responsibility for their actions and face man’s law just as the bible says and our church teaches. We are ALL human and to always try to hide scandal. No hiding the sin is costing the church dearly.

The church needs to learn from this BIG TIME. It made the scandal even worse that it was covered up!

I however will not turn my back on the church as it was not the church as a whole that did this, it was men.

It is just too bad everyone else has to be here to clean the mess up. 😦
 
I was baptised at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Oceanside, CA. Has this effected them? I would assume so. 😦
 
How sad. 😦 I pray that they will be able to come up with the money that they need. :signofcross:
 
The magnitude of litigation is simply going to result in a change in how the Church is legally structured in this country. Expect to see more “independent” ministries like CA and catholic schools that are operated under the oversight, but not the ownership. Lawyers are going to gut the diocesan programs of all funding.

This might actually cut both ways! An awful lot of the diocesan structures in the US are riddled with dissenters and those who are seeking to remake the Catholic Church in their own image. Such people inspire no vocations and very few lay spiritual offspring. Their bitterness is poor witness and attracts few in the younger generations. Perhaps depriving them of the legacy of contributions of the past faithful will speed the purge. Meanwhile, donations and growth will go to organizations faithful to the church, loyal to the leadership of the local bishop, but not actually owned by the diocese. A thought to ponder, anyways…
