Brethren, I have recently changed my Avatar to a picture of St. Maria Goretti. She is the patron of victims of rape. The story of St. Goretti is truly extraordinary. One July 5, 1902, she was sitting outside of her house, sewing a shirt, when the son of the family she was living with came over to her and gave her a choice: Have sex with me, or die. Ironically, the owner of the shirt she was sewing was the assailant. Maria choose to die instead. She was stabbed twelve times, and when she tried to run, she was stabbed two more times. Later that night, she died in the local hospital holding a crucifix and a picture of Our Lady. With her dying breath, she forgave her killer.
St. Maria Goretti is a model, especially for youth. Too many teenagers fornicate these days. This eleven-year-old girl is an example of true purity and innocence. She was willing to die so she would not offend God by fornicating. St. Goretti did not choose death, she chose God. She recognized how offended God would be if she fornicated, and she chose not to offend him.
We must constantly pray to her, asking her for an end to fornication. Someone, especially one so young, willing to die instead of fornicate, is amazing. She is our defense against the sex that plagues our modern culture.
St. Maria Goretti, pray for us!
