Sandy Berger gets his wrist slapped. What does it mean for the republic when laws are passed and ignored; when commissions are established ostensibly to investigate negligence and wrongdoing and only result in a whitewash of those in power?
Congress has been in the habit of delegating its authority to the Executive Branch, and finds the Judicial Branch ignoring its legislation. What will happen when the next terrorist attack kills 30,000 Americans and not 3,000? If Congress doesn’t assert itself soon, the public will turn to the President and the national security state and will desperately trade more freedoms for security.
This piece put me in a somber mood.
