I think feelings are too strong on both sides for it to ever end… on the plus side we can make a song about it.

This is the thread that will not end… yes it goes round and round my friend. Some people started it reading it not knowing what it was and now they will be reading it forever just because!!! This is the thread that will not end…

LOL…oh no! Lamb Chop, Hush Puppy and Sheri! It took me over 15 years to forget that song (my daughter is 20 now). :banghead: 😉

I think you go to far when you accuse–yes accuse–those who allow their children to believe in santa for a while of modernism and relativism. I would bet most of those you have accused try to live their lives according to Church teaching and accept all Church teaching not picking and choosing. The fact that you view santa as akin to the occult and damaging to belief in God - says more about you than it does about those who allow their children to believe in santa. Aside from those claiming trama from discovering the truth on this thread–I have never personally met one of these–irreparably damaged individuals. If it was as damaging as you apparently believe there would be no one believing in God.

I myself am far more concerned about things like television. Talk about deception and the spreading of lies. Most shows present much sinful activity as normal and healthy behavior to be pursused and celebrated. Viewers are continually bombarded with adds that celebrate sexuality and materialism as the highest goods we can strive for. That without these two things our lives will be meaningless and unfulfilled. To me the lies and deceptions spread by most television shows and advertising are much more insidious than santa. We all mature and grow out of believing in santa unfortunately most of us do no grow up and out of a belief in the lies and myths perpetrated by most shows and advertisements–indeed many buy them wholesale and spend their whole lives chasing an illusory happiness. Now unlike the anti-santa crowd I do not advocate for the abolition of TV (though that may be the only way to put the geni back in the bottle (its an expression and not an indication of a belief in genis–just thought I should clarify given the way this thread has gone)) but rather the reform of its programming content.

I am also more concerned about smart phones, gaming systems, club sports, football in the south, etc. all of which seem far more distracting and damaging to childrens faith. I don’t know of any children that have been kept from church or distracted at mass because of santa but I have seen kids texting, playing games and checking the internet on their phones at mass. I know people who miss mass because of sporting events. There’s a damaging message to send to your kids–your 6th grade game is more important than mass. Sorry–I find that more disturbing than a young child believing in santa and if our children grow up and think faith isn’t important or worse yet don’t believe–I think things like this are the reason. We let worldly pursuits and fun replace the practice of our faith thereby indicating faith isn’t important and by implication probably not true. Afterall if what we believe is true–wouldn’t mass be our highest priority? Unfortunately for many it’s not a priority at all.

I’m not here to take sides in the santa debate. I just don’t think it’s that important. I don’t think it is damaging as the anti-santa crowd claims. I think there are far more damaging and insideous things in our society–truly damaging lies presented as normal and good–that we should be far more concerned about as they are not easily seen and they are really intended to lead us astray and down the road to perdition–and I don’t think that can truly be said about santa–who, after all, models the giving of gifts to others.

It’s a shame that so many people on the “Yes, Virginia” side of this debate are unwilling to have this discussion in a civil manner.

But OP said something that needed to be said. You cannot blame OP for the lack of civility from people who were upset by OP’s honesty.
