Since this is the Traditional Catholicism forum let me throw this into the mix. Have you ever compared the Collect for St. Nicholas in the Latin Mass and the new Mass? Interesting:

Traditional “O God, You adorned the Blessed Bishop Nicholas with countless miracles; grant, we beseech You, that by his merits and prayers we may be delivered from the flames of hell.”

New “Father, hear our prayers for mercy, and by the help of Saint Nicholas keep us safe from all danger, and guide us on the way of salvation.”

Interesting no?

Santa was never part of my culture, so there I have an excuse 😃

The problem today is the prominence of Santa Claus. Back in the day Santa wasn’t the central figure. People still recognize that Christmas is about Christ. Today, people don’t even say Christmas. It started with Xmas, now its just Happy Holidays.
Sadly your right about the lack of Christ in Christmas, that is why the K of C here has a major annual campaign titled “Keep Christ in Christmas”. However, for those of us who were raised with the tradition of Santa there really is no problem celebrating both the Christian Christmas and the secular, nor should there be. We don’t protest coloring Easter eggs or Easter egg hunts just because Easter is the celebration of Christ’s resurrection!

I do protest the overspending at Christmas, we have always been careful to provide reasonable, sensible gifts for our children and modest gifts to others. We have also always provided additional gifts for those who cannot afford them; that is one way of keeping Christ in Christmas without abolishing the feast day/holiday altogether.

Right. I also do my best never to say XMas. I also read something in the past that asks, “Why do you X (cross) Christ out of Christmas?”

I came across this this Morning.

BERLIN (Reuters Life!) - A group of German Catholics wants to do away with Santa Claus because of the fictional figure’s commercial hype and replace him with St Nicolas and the selfless giving they say he represents.

Even before shops fill with Santa-themed goodies, the Bonifatiuswerk of German Catholics – a Catholic aid organization – has begun calling for “Santa Claus-free zones.”

WHY NOT take back our Holiday from the Secularists?
I love it !

kudos to this organization 🙂

I’m afraid this thread just reminds me of the commercial aspects of Christmas. It’s too early!!! Nearly all the shops where I live are selling Christmas goods, some even had Christmas stock before Halloween stock.

It’s early October, still early autumn, the weather is still warm and sunny we’re still 7/8 weeks away from Advent. Much too early for talk of Christmas, sacred or secular!

Never too early to reclaim the crown that belongs to Christ The King. Best now, before it’s … too late 🙂

Just an interesting not on how “x-mas” came into being. It is not, as someseem to think a removal of Christ from the word. Here is a link to an articule that explains it rather well.

I still don’t like it. The fact that it might have a reasonable, logical genesis does not mean that its usage today portrays the same acceptable logic. Word meanings and associations change with time.

Yep… there were Christmas Cards and lights and such out in Target’s back Corner.

I KNOW… WAY early. But, I got so excited… CHRISTMAS is coming…

Many may not even realize it, but all the retailers go to Market for Christams in Feb.

In fact, TOY FAIR is held in New York City, usually over Valentines Weekend. And all the big orders (Toys R US) are placed for the Christmas Stock.

It seems crazy, but it takes a long time to fill all the orders for say Plastic Christmas Trees and garland to be MADE in China, put in a Can, and shipped to the States, through customs, on a truck and delivered.

Things have sped up in the last 10 years… and I suspect that many stores are clearing out LAST YEARS items before they get this years shipments.

I must say Target had some GORGEOUS Religious Christmas Cards, at really good prices… And I love to send those out. I have them all picked and I love to handwrite out my cards on ThanksGiving Day while my family casually enjoys each others company and food is in the oven… Part of my Holiday season!

I just feel tingly all over… I refuse to let the Retail world RUIN my Christmas… I look for ways they can make it better!

That maybe. It still remains that it is not a secularization nor attempt to Remove Christ from Christmas.

OK, I guess I underestimated the theological validity of Hallmark cards. How can you say there is no attempt to remove Christ from Christmas with the “slang” term Xmas? You have no idea what is on the mind of the perpetrator. I prefer to be safe and stick with Christmas thank you and any cards I receive with Xmas on them will go straight into the trash.

That’s the spirit. No matter how much love and devotion to God, and the desire to share it with you another person has, if they don’t express it to your definition of how it should be expressed the reject it. Xmas is not slang. Did you even read the articule on the link I posted? I would say it is short hand.

I know that as a fallen man I have no chance of Truely expressing love and devotion to God in the fullness and love that He not only ask, but desirves. I pray that my inadiquit expression are received by him and excepted. Also i could never place a Card given to me In love by a loved one or friend straight in the trash. That is cold and callous. 😦

Now that is funny.

Just another little thought that accured to me. You seem to be the one removeing Christ from Christmas. Not the store owner that writes MERRY X-MAS on the store window,or the greeting card writer that usees it(which I have personnally never seen on a greeting card, they most all say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays ETC…). By the way from your thinking here you may want to quit useing the word holiday. I mean is that not the secularization of Holy Days?
And just what do you mean by play it safe? Wher in all of scripture or Church Tradition are we told to play it safe? WE are told to spread the Good News I find nothing of playing it safe by doing that at anythime in History. You ae talking here like the Protestant that rejects the Pope and St Peter as the First Pope on the grounds that it does not call him that in Scripture.

Hi all,
I dressed up as Santa Claus one year. I entertained a whole Montessori classroom of kids. It was great fun. I was exhausted at the end of it!
Which reminds me of a joke about the jolly man :
The four stages of life- You believe in Santa Claus - You don’t believe in Santa Claus - You become Santa Claus - You look like Santa Claus.😃
God Bless,
Colmcille.

You all may honor the birth of Christ in your own way with Xmas, Happy Holiday, etc. I prefer to Honor the birth of Christ by paying Him due reverence. By your low opinion of my attitude I can assume you see nothing wrong with the creeping disrespect that is eroding our Church, well sorry but I will not change regardless of what progressives and modernists think of me. In fact, the more I get pressured to accept all this nonsense the tougher my stand becomes.

that a boy. By the way just so you know i am considered a very tradional person. very conservative. and not at all progressive or or modernists. If I had my way there would not have been the Of mass of Pope Paul VI. We would still be using the old calender as well.
I still have 8 track tapes that I listen to.
