How do you tell someone [sarcastically] “they’re such a great listener.”

For good cause.

“I note, with great concern, that your hearing is adversely affected by the sound of my voice. Wouldn’t you agree?”

I would find another way to tell them that doesn’t involve sarcasm. Sarcasm is only for people who aren’t intelligent enough to be witty. Sarcasm is meant to intentionally cause pain to the recipient in the guise of humor.

I have trouble imagining our Lord using sarcasm to convey a message.

Sarcasm is shrewd or harsh. Wit is meant… to be forgiving as well as informing, giving the person the chance to listen/amend (not specifically the listening as referred to in OP).

Be of brave heart, Flimmy. The complete quote is this:

“Sarcasm: the last refuge of modest and chaste-souled people when the privacy of their soul is coarsely and intrusively invaded.”

—Fyodor Dostoevsky

Really? “Whited sepulchre” hardly sounds “loving” or charitable. Sometimes one must “call 'em as they see 'em”.

Dostoevsky… Didn’t he write “the brothers karamazov”?.. I could be wrong as its been a few years since I read classics.

I didn’t say Jesus always spoke lovingly and charitably. Our Lord frequently spoke in parables and similes (which is what ‘whitewashed sepulchre’ is), but I haven’t found one instance of Jesus using sarcasm.

I’m far from being a Bible scholar myself, but we do have a brilliant theologian at our church. I’ll ask him next time I see him if he knows of anyplace where Jesus used sarcasm.

Don’t know how. But sarcasm can be okay (at least I think it can) if you are joking and the person knows it. That can be funny sometimes.

I don’t know, sometimes sarcasm can be gentler and more charitable than any of the alternatives.

I have relatives who, for example, are overly prone to trying to force far too much food down the throats of their guests in the name of being hospitable. They admit to this fault themselves.

When they try it on me (and believe me, I am far too fond of good food myself, and overweight as a result) I just gently say ‘thanks, I’d waste away to nothing if it weren’t for you’ or something similar. We all have a good laugh, no-one’s feelings are hurt and we move on.

If I said something else, like ‘stop pestering me to eat’, it would be far more uncharitable and offensive.

Greetings Swiss Guy and LilyM,

I have to ask a question. Would you guys be sarcastic to Jesus or to Mary? IF the answer is no, then sarcasm is not a good thing to be doing. [Sarcasm is not a good thing to do at all. We are to encourage each other as long as it is called today. We are to build each other up and not tear each other down.] However, if you could be sarcastic to Jesus and to Mary then I have no idea of what to tell you.

God Bless.

Hmm…

“Oh no you’re a great listener. In fact, so great that your ears are cleared of any obstruction and therefore making it easy anything to go in one and exit the other.”

Oh well, I tried. Sarcasm is one thing I have to exercise on a daily basis… both for humor and verbal self-defense. 😛

Depends on the situation. If Mary and I were joking around, then hypothetically it could be okay. 😃

Greetings Swiss Guy,

I could never by the grace of God be sarcastic to Our Blessed Lady or to Our Lord at any time. Somehow I don’t see how being sarcastic in any situation could be okay.

I guess we have to agree to disagree.

God Bless.
