I have OCD and have been reading Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer. ( Yes, I know she’s not Catholic). She attributes worry to Satan, and my Bible study teacher has said the same thing.
OCD is a biochemical disorder, where personal experiences can bring it out or make it worse.
So, how does Satan fit into this? Or does he?

Just from my own experiences, I believe that many mental and physical afflictions are due to evil spirit. Look at how Christ cured those with great afflictions by casting out demons. I believe the same can be said today.

In my mind, anything that causes us to be less than the original man and woman that were created in the first and second chapter of Genesis is a result of Satan’s influence in the world.

Are you both saying it’s not a biochemical imbalance? PET scans show differences in the brains of people with OCD VS those who don’t.

They can certainly seek to hit one at ones weakness…but…

But I would not normally attribute OCD to other than the psychological- biological causes per se.

I feel like my Bible study teacher and Joyce Meyer are saying people who worry are possessed.

I don’t think they mean you are possessed.

OCD and other things that are bad for you are negative. Negativity is something that the devil may use to tear you down. Therefore something that disturbs your peace and makes life difficult for you needlessly can be a negative factor that makes you unhappy.

So you mean that Satan can take a problem we already have and use it to mess with us?

Yes, OCD is a biological disorder. It can be treated

Satan can Try to use any illness to make one worry or despair. You are a child of God and God is greater than Satan. Just keep your eyes on Him.
Seek the advice of a good priest and psychiatrist. God bless you.

Thanks. I have a really good spiritual director and psychiatrist.

The world, the flesh and the devil. These are the causes of temptation and affliction. Such conditions can be caused by one or all of these. We are creatures who are broken, lessened, darkened by the fall of Adam and Eve. Thus we are vulnerable to the effects of these factors and prone to disorder. So, yes, Satan (or one of his minions) could do this to you directly, or he could take advantage of a biological condition and make it worse or make you focus on it more to worsen its affect on you. The idea isn’t to make you sick, but to put you through things which could lead you away from God and to reject his teachings. In effect, to lead you to hell. Satan does not have to “possess” you in the classic sense in order to affect this outcome. Listen to your spiritual director and medical personnel (as long as they understand things from a Catholic perspective) and work with them to help you deal with these challenges for they can be a call to sanctity.

God Bless
Julia
