Satan - can he be forgiven?

God doesn’t profit from sin, therefore He could not profit from satan’s sin.

I think the war in heaven occurred outside of time, hence the fate of the fallen angels is technically sealed; it is not because God’s mercy lacks anything, but because of the irrevocability of their own free choice (ie. they are not going back)

I think God would forgive satan if satan asked for it. Although that would imply for satan that he then had to become obedient and respectful towards His Maker, and I don’t think satan plans on doing that any time soon.

There is a version of the aprocryphal book of Enoch that details the fall of the angels and suggests that they cannot be forgiven, on the other hand.

Whenever I imagine satan, an image of George Bush passes into my head; the ruler of this world, who works to deceive the many and everything he says is a lie. He is even interested in Babylonia (Iraq), as was ‘Marduk’ (satan).
Let’s not politicize the debate. At least george Bush is pro-life, pro-family, meaning monogamy between man and woman.

I would put this question forward perhaps: If satan decided by his own free will to stop tempting people, telling lies and decided to do God’s will to the best of powerful ability, do you really think God would stop him? God does not profit from sin.

Of course God wouldn’t stop any being who converted and started doing good. You have a point about the decision being made outside of time, however… But even Padre Pio talked about how resisting temptation gained merit for souls. And I believe God’s mercy is infinite and when there is true sorrow for sin, His grace can bring about ways to bring good even out of evil or bad. For example, abortionists who convert and then work for pro-life and save babies, thus turning an evil in their life toward the good.

Things that seem so very hopeless to us, even seeing someone in a coma, are not hopeless to God…He can bring great good out of any situation through His grace and Love.

But if the harm or evil was not there, then He could work with that situation as well…that is why we can’t say things are predestined.
The future can be changed by prayer, sacrifice and good works done in faith. The future is always changing accoding to the decisions made in the present moment of time.

I’m sorry I should not have politicized the discussion, we went off topic there. For the record I am supportive of aforementioned aspects of Bush’s conservatism, most especially his hostility to abortion. I say he makes me think of the devil, not for poltical reasons, but moreso because he somehow manages to present himself as a saintly christian man, the prodigal son even, despite the fact he appears to lie, misconstrue and mislead so very often, and he is the most powerful person walking this Earth; my image of the devil is likewise a powerful man who presents himself as pure or innocent despite the fact he is a rampant sinner.

I could be mistaken though.

But back on topic.

I found the quotation from the book of Enoch I mentionedfor consideration in our current discussion to whom it may interest:

Background on Enoch (for those unfamiliar): In the book of Genesis Enoch is the seventh generation from Adam and it says in that book he was taken up into heaven. Tradition holds that he was a prophet who read a sentence against the sinful Earth, that had been corrupted by the angels falling from heaven, before the flood came, and he is also along with Elijah sometimes thought to be one of the two witnesses mentioned in the book of revelations. The book of Enoch was I think written in the 1st century BC, and was part of the canon until sometime or another the church fathers or some such authority took it out of the bible. It is now regarded to be simply a historical work, and not inspired scripture; although in the Ethiopian church if I am not mistaken they still hold Enoch to be part of the canon. It might also be interesting to know that the letter of Jude takes a direct quotation from the book of Enoch.

Here is the quote (note: Azazel, the leader, is often interpreted to be Satan):

CHAPTER XII.
  1. Before these things Enoch was hidden, and no one of the children of men knew where he was hidden, and where he abode, and what had become of him. 2. And his activities had to do with the Watchers, and his days were with the holy ones.
  2. And I, Enoch was blessing the Lord of majesty and the King of the ages, and lo! the Watchers called me–Enoch the scribe–and said to me: 4. ‘Enoch, thou scribe of righteousness, go, †declare† to the Watchers of the heaven who have left the high heaven, the holy eternal place, and have defiled themselves with women, and have done as the children of earth do, and have taken unto themselves wives: “Ye have wrought great destruction on the earth: 5. And ye shall have no peace nor forgiveness of sin: and inasmuch as †they† delight themselves in †their† children, 6. The murder of †their† beloved ones shall †they† see, and over the destruction of †their† children shall †they† lament, and shall make supplication unto eternity, but mercy and peace shall ye not attain.”’
CHAPTER XIII.
  1. And Enoch went and said: 'Azâzêl,
p. 40

thou shalt have no peace: a severe sentence has gone forth against thee to put thee in bonds: 2. And thou shalt not have toleration nor †request† granted to thee, because of the unrighteousness which thou hast taught, and because of all the works of godlessness and unrighteousness and sin which thou hast shown to men.’ 3. Then I went and spoke to them all together, and they were all afraid, and fear and trembling seized them. 4. And they besought me to draw up a petition for them that they might find forgiveness, and to read their petition in the presence of the Lord of heaven. 5. For from thenceforward they could not speak (with Him) nor lift up their eyes to heaven for shame of their sins for which they had been condemned. 6. Then I wrote out their petition, and the prayer in regard to their spirits and their deeds individually and in regard to their requests that they should have forgiveness and length 〈of days〉†. 7. And I went off and sat down at the waters of Dan, in the land of Dan, to the south of the west of Hermon: I read their petition till I fell asleep. 8. And behold a dream came to me, and visions fell down upon me, and I saw visions of chastisement, ⌈and a voice came bidding (me)⌉ I to tell it to the sons of heaven, and reprimand them. 9. And when I awaked, I came unto them, and they were all sitting gathered together, weeping in ’Abelsjâîl, which is between Lebanon and Sênêsêr, with their faces covered. 10. And I recounted before them all the visions which I had seen in sleep, and I began to speak the words of righteousness, and to reprimand the heavenly Watchers

We all know this story in it’s different variation. What if God forgave Satan, can Satan repent, can Satan do this, can Satan do that, what if etc. bla bla bla.

But seriously now, if God in his all powerful nature wanted to, he could strictly speaking forgive Satan and offer salvation to Satan in such a way that Satan accepts it right?

Adding to this, can Satan be tempted to do the right thing? We all talk about temptation as an evil, since Satan is the prince of lies and most evil one, his temptation (if there was any) would be to be good again.

Since Satan is an intelligent being, more so than us. Isn’t it possible that he sometimes regrets his actions ? That he thinks sometimes, ‘what have I done’ - feels any remorse for what he does.
No. He has much time, opportunity and hasn’t. Moreover, God confirmed the angels in their states, good and bad. Satan is an angel.

Some years ago, I asked Dr Hayden Ramsay, a moral theologian and philosophy professor (Sydney) this very question.
He said because satan made his decision to rebel in the total fullness of knowledge, of his past, present and future, he therefore cannot be forgiven.
When we make mistakes / sin our knowledge is imperfect and our concept of time is linear so therefore we can be forgiven.
God bless
ignorance is bliss!

But Satan did change when he rebelled against God, so he can change and still exist. So why couldn’t he change again without ceasing to exist?

Welcome Mater to CAF! I hope you like it here. What did you mean by Satan did change?

Satan did not change. He made a choice, but did not change. God confirmed the Angels in this state of obedience or of rebellion.

I know that God is absolutely forgiving to anyone who asks Him for forgiveness.
But I think Satan is eternally evil, will never ask for forgiveness. Otherwise Satan will “become” a good spirit, and will not be called Satan anymore.
Code:

It’s ONLY my opinion.🙂

Aplogies if I am repeating previous posts, but I have only glanced at them.
Could Satan be forgiven?
What about…
SHOULD Satan be forgiven? 🤷
Or even…
Satan is the epitomy of Evil. The Dark One. Abaddon. The Accuser of the Brethren. The Adversary. The Adversary. Apollyon. the Tempter.
the Enemy, and many more…
Does / would he want forgiveness?

I have read some excellent answers to this question, and they all seem to give a credible explanation as to why satan can’t be forgiven…but I have a different take…right or wrong, I would like comments on this possibility:

I think it is impossible to satan to ask forgiveness in Eternity! We all know that in Eternity there is no past, nor there is future…in Eternity is only the present. AS OF RIGHT NOW! So in this context satan’s rebellion is an ONGOING EVENT as we speak, just as Creation is. How can satan ask forgiveness in the same moment when he is rebelling? He can’t do both at the same time! That’s why is impossible for him to repent of his transgression against God…yet continue the same transgression against God in the same time!?? For that satan would need to stop rebelling FIRST! But here lies the paradox…if he stops rebelling, then his rebellion would be in the past…right? And after he stops rebelling, then he would ask forgiveness (sometimes in the future) An IMPOSSIBILITY IN ETERNITY!
Adding to this, can Satan be tempted to do the right thing? We all talk about temptation as an evil, since Satan is the prince of lies and most evil one, his temptation (if there was any) would be to be good again…
Believe it or not, the Book of Job is an excellent example how God brings satan “the tempter” to achieve good, by tempting and bringing all kinds of evil on Job…and WITH GREAT SUCCESS, satan is doing God’s work without even realizing it! [Job is soo good that he is about to die and enter Heaven on merit…but that is an impossibility for him! (We all know the story) But it is satan’s temptations which brings Job back to God, and to God’s grace, and that grace is the salvation of Job, just as God’s Grace is the salvation for all who are saved.].
Since Satan is an intelligent being, more so than us. Isn’t it possible that he sometimes regrets his actions ? That he thinks sometimes, ‘what have I done’ - feels any remorse for what he does.
He cannot feel sorry and angry at the same time…as his rebellion is ongoing. In his rebellion he doesn’t fell any remorse, otherwise he would cease to rebell… rather there is his pride, which fuels his rebellion. In that state there is no remorse, nor is any will to accept forgiveness.

Hastrman:
he’s smarter than anyone but God Himself.
Yes, but he is taking advantage of a physical feature of ourselves that we are not aware of.

The temptation must eventually make it’s appearance somewhere within the body and transform from a concept of desired temptation to a source of neuronal manipulation to be further processed in thought.

It surprises me that of all the concern expressed by the celestial realm for us in the susceptibility to sin, coupled with a now advancement by man in the physical understanding of what makes us tick, that a divine revelation wouldn’t simply tell us how we can cauterize(if that’s the word) that entry point in the brain.

Result: No more concern for sin and no need for discernment.

absolutely speaking God can forgive satan and all the spirits in hell provided if anf only if they repent. But souls in will ever repent for etenity because repentance can come only because of the grace of God. Becasue rerentance is a supernatural act thus needs a supernatural assistance. But God, in his justice has eternalyy resolve to withdaw all gracess from them, thus it is impossible for them to repent and be forgiven. If revelation tells us that after a long time all creatures in hell will be united ultimately to God in heaven then we can understand this by asuming that at the end God gives unto them the efficacious grace congruent to infallibly insure their repentance and this is not impossible if only God willed it from eternity; but the church teaces us that he willed otherwise.

God will forgive everyone who humbles himself sincerely from within…even Satan, even the 1/3 of the fallen angels. Remember that just like us, Satan and his members has a choice. But evidently he has already made that choice a very long time ago. He chose not to humble himself before God. He chose to equate himself with God, that is why he and his army were thrown out of heaven. That is why, he lost all goodness (which can only come from God and as an effect of being away from God), and became evil.

But the question is, will Satan and his members chose God and deny himself?

God is loving and forgiving, but He is also just. Definitely, God will not do the injustice of forcing a soul to love him. It is a soul’s choice.

Is the line of reasoning on Satan’s being “evil” based on Satan’s rebellion? In other words, if all Satan ever did was rebel against God is that why he is considered the father or evil? I ask because I have questions on the nature of evil, the concept of evil. There are other threads here on the causes of evil (is it God?) and why/if God allows evil. So it seems that to just say that Satan is the cause of all evil is to jump to some solid conclusiosn about the nature of evil. Perhaps not well worded, but perhaps you get my point. Just curious.

What if satan does not know right form wrong, but he is very sorry for what he has done…even though he did not know it was wrong. do you think that god give him another chance and forgive him. he committed a terrible sin all those years ago and is very sorry for what he did.
