There is a local so-called Christian talk station on our AM dial around here called WSHO that goes back and forth in its anti-Catholicism. Recently, it brought it back in full force. Yesterday, it perpetuated the “Satan Claus” argument, saying if you rearrange Santa’s name, you get Satan. I’m thinking of writing a letter of grievance to them. What would be a good argument against this ridiculous logic?

First, my argument would be that to use ‘Santa Claus’, at least the secular concept of him, as an argument against Catholicism is to confuse secular practices and traditions with the Church. There are no dogma that require belief in Santa or even encourage it. Now there is St. Nicholas but that’s another thing entirely. What our world has made Santa Claus into is in no ways a representative of the church or it’s teachings.

That being said, the argument that you can rearrange Santa to get Satan, is akin to arguing that because the word ‘live’ also can be arranged to spell ‘evil’ means anything alive is of the devil.

There is no point in arguing with anyone who would believe something that ridiculous. My advise would be to stop listening to that station.

We need more Catholic radio in our area. That’s all there is to it.

The letters in Santa can be rearranged to spell Satan? Who knew??? And I just figured out that the letters in God can be rearranged to spell dog! It’s all so clear to me now!

Yeah, rocklobster, you’re right. It’s a weak argument. Just like those people who used to claim that Ronald Wilson Reagan was the antichrist because there with 6 letters in each of his names, it’s a ridiculous argument that has no basis except observation of coincidence. I don’t know how to fight it, except maybe to make fun of how silly it is.

You could remind people at that station of the very real story of St. Nicholas:) I hope they wouldn’t start re-arranging that name and find something dastardly with that. What a grinch!:angel1::highprayer::harp:

There entire purpose is to entertain or agitate. Don’t give them the satisfaction of being the caller or letter they are looking for. You’re not going to change their minds. You’ll just provide more folly for them and they will use whatever ammunition you give them to their benefit. Just turn off the radio and pray for them.

There are a LOT of words you could rearrange to get “evil” words, or words that are completely unrelated.

I think the argument is ridiculous, Satan Claus.

It’s just a little bit of fun for children!

With such reaching and skewed logic, I doubt anything you say will register with that radio host, let alone helping him learn.

A perfect rebuttal would be to ask is, can this be done in other languages? Case closed.

I have heard that said many times, 100% of them were joking, some were only 1/2 joking and using it as a way to complain about Santa representing materialism and focus on gift getting over focus on Christ.

Many protestants dont even realize Santa Claus has any connection to a Catholic Saint. Are you sure this was some sort of anti-catholic argument?

Actually, the dude is a hypocrite. He says that Christmas is all a “good thing because it celebrates the birth of Christ.” But oh, no, Santa Claus is evil!🤷

Christmas and Santa Claus are not mutually inclusive. Santa is not part of the Christian side of it, though St. Nicholas is. The story of Santa Claus, with the red suit and the reindeer are not a Christian thing but just a story. Christmas isn’t about Santa Claus, but about Christ. Many Christians see the entire concept of Santa, the materialism and consumerism that gift giving has become, etc to be a bad thing, and in a way they definitely are.

It doesn’t make him a hypocrite to say that Christmas is good, because Christmas IS good… but Santa is not about what Christmas is a celebration of, as evidenced by the fact that most Americans regardless of religious belief now see Santa as an emblem of Christmas.

When Dana Carvey was on Saturday Night Live he did a skit as The Church Lady and had the same line, you rearrange Santa to get Satan. Thanks for bringing up the memory of that skit and giving me a good laugh.

And here’s another hypocritical thing about them. The station will play Christmas music throughout the month of December and play inspirational messages about it, then turn around and negatively criticize it. They should pick a side.
