When Christ is led into the wilderness in Matt. 4, the devil tempts him 3 times. Interestingly, in the 2nd temptation, Satan uses Scripture to try to lead Jesus astray. Of course, Jesus refutes him with more Scripture.

The problem with the Bible study method of most Protestants is that the Word becomes completely subjective, and they think they need to figure everything out on their own. In their system of self-interpretation, they must read everything for themselves and live according to what they find. But Satan knows the Holy Scriptures better than we ever will on this earth, and he can use even them to cause people to stumble.

I guess I don’t really have a point, other than thank God for authority and Tradition! I think the 2nd temptation of Christ is all the more evidence for our need for a Church that is established by Christ himself, that we may not be deceived, even by Holy Scripture.

While Satin knows the bible inside and out, and has more knowledge than I can even hope to have, I have to disagree with the premise that he is smarter than me. After all Satin choose himself.

I choose God.

Same here. I’ve seen it. Or a good part of it. It is a distortion of truth, of knowledge, of reason, of what it means to be us.

In other words, it is stupid.

Alluring? Sure. But only at times.

Do we buy some of it for enjoyment? Yep! But something anyone who thinks about it cannot resist and laugh at?

No.

Maybe not smarter, but better at decieving and tricking. He could twist anything to support what he wants.

More street smarts maybe?

Not sure which word would best fit.

Compared to fallen humans, his intellectual powers exceed our own I believe. After falling from the highest Choir of Angels, the deceiver lost none of his powers, yet they are perverted towards deception and lies. May God grant us the Grace to Love through Mercy and Justice and protect us from the accuser and his tempting. Thanks and God Bless.

Someone once told me that"no one can quote the bible better than the devil himself"

I heard a speaker on Catholic radio yesterday. Maybe it was Fr. Corrapi; I don’t remember. He said the only thing that Satan cannot imitate is humility. Therefore, humility is the key to all else - love, forgiveness, knowing God’s will, etc. That would include understanding scripture it would seem.

I have to disagree with your disagreement. 😉

Created as first among angels, his capacities far surpas our own. True, he has chosen a path of foolishness, and without truth on his side he fights a lost battle. At the same time, we mustn’t underestimate him.

I’m not saying that you claimed we could do it on our own. Just emphasizing that it is the sacrifice of Christ that defeats Satan, not our efforts. Respect him to the point that you realize that God alone can defeat him, and rejoice that He already has.

I have to agree with this and point out that we are to “test the spirits”. We are warned by the Church to be suspect of private revelation until it can be verified. To think that we don’t have to be wary of Satan because we think we are smarter than him sounds prideful to me and St. Augustine tells us that three things are necessary for salvation: humility, humility, and humility. Then we will truly be ready to recieve Christ through and with the assistance of His Church.

Liar ! ------- is a good start. :yup:

not only is he smarter than we are, he is in our life more than you know. Let me preface by this: I hold myself to a high standard. I am not proud of my sins. I am ashamed of the times when I fall. However, I am completely astonished by the secular movement in our society. I don’t understand it. Do people realize how the evil one is playing them like a fiddle? TV, sports, hobbies, and anything else that draws you away from scripture I believe is evil. We are trending to a completely secular society. Yet I have to ask: where do 95% of our laws come from? Ask someone who is from the secular point of view why it is wrong to kill: “it just is!” Don’t you realize that so much of what we dictate as right and wrong is based on scripture, and a big chunk exodus 20? I don’t understand how you can follow the laws of our society, yet not be a believer and a follower of Christ, isn’t this hypocrytical? The point: this is the evil one playing you like a fiddle. The devil wants you to think he doesn’t exist. He wants you to procrastinate in your turn to faith. he wants you to believe that when you cash in your chips, that there is no hell. he wants you to believe that it is ok to sin just a bit. he wants you to live for today. Don’t people realize these things? I didn’t until about 1 year ago, when I shook hands with the devil, and realized that the evil one could be right beside you, and you would never know it. One must keep his/her guard up constantly, and realize the evil is there, every second, he knows every one of us better than we know ourselves, he knows what our weaknesses are, and he uses those weaknesses to his advantage every second.
