Satan or superstitious?

So what is bad luck anyway?

I have had several strange incidents happen to me which seemed like pure ‘bad luck’ to me. Last week, being used to these strange happenings, I almost predicted something would go wrong with my date who I was looking forward to seeing. I knew he would cancle and sure enough, at the last minute he did.

This things have been pooh-poohed by people I’ve told them too, and a priest told me it was just superstition. But I think too many coincidences means not really a coincidence. Could the devil be controlling these things to make me believe in bad luck? Or maybe he’s just having fun.

Was there anything that happened on your previous date (if there was one) or before the date that made you think he would cancel? Sometimes we pick up on things that we aren’t necessarily consciously thinking about. I also know that Satan plays on our weaknesses. Every one of us has bouts of bad luck, it’s in our perception of these incidents where Satan plays a part.

It’s just Murphy’s Law in action : Anything that CAN go wrong WILL go wrong.

Just remember this is life on EARTH, things just naturally gets screwed up. IF this were Heaven then things would turn out fine all the time.

I can only count on one type of luck, BAD luck… I think some folks in life are naturally ‘lucky’, they win raffles, lotteries, they seem to have an easy go of things. I think other folks are naturally unlucky IF they had to choose between a 50-50 propositions like calling heads or tails on a coin flip, they would lose an inordinate amount of times. That’s me.

BUT I am not the least bit superstitious, I don’t believe in any good luck charms or any of that stuff. I just have to work harder to succeed, and I always anticipate and sometimes even plan that things CAN and WILL go wrong.

The thing about it is, even while knowing this, I still love to gamble (as in casinos). I hate to lose so that keeps me away from going too often.

So it’s NOT bad luck it’s just Murphy’s Law and Murphy was an optimist…

In my life, God has used incidents of “bad luck” to keep me from doing something stupid or sinful or self-destructive.

For instance, perhaps our friend who loses coin tosses more than 50 per cent of the time is actually being protected from a gambling addiction.

I try not to count on luck, but to count on our Lord, the BVM, and the Saints.

I agree with our Anglican friend that you probably picked up something subliminally that told you that guy would cancel your date.

Sometimes “bad luck” can be our Lord trying to teach us about patience. That has surely happened to me! I’m sure He can use it to teach us other virtues, too!

I am not sure one way or another whether Satan can create bad luck. But he sure can use it - even to telling you that you have bad luck, hoping to make you think that God is being mean to you, or picking on you.

Don’t let any kind of luck separate you from our Lord!

Dear Stylus,

Maybe God was intervening!

We can never know why these things happen. Perhaps if the gentleman in question had showed, the two of you would have been killed in a car crash. Maybe his guardian angel realized the two of you were the wrong combination and inspired him to cancel.

Since we can never know, I would suggest accepting these things with joyful resignation to the will of God. They help us remember who should be the master of our lives.

IF the guy is still interested he would call again to set up another date. It may be that he had second thoughts and this is NOT MR. right for you. IF he really had a legitimate excuse to cancel, (and I can not see any reasonable explanation to cancel a date at the last minute), he would have rescheduled.

IF he is not interested in you enough to ask to reschedule then he is not the right person to be with you. I’m so sorry things did not work out for you. Dating is tough. It makes you so happy when you can finally get out of that mode. It’s been more than 30 years for me and I don’t miss it at all. Of course when Mr or Miss right does finally show up, it is a really great time.

Keep at it, praying does help. I made the 9 consecutive weekly novenas to Our Lady before I met my wife. Not too many churches have that anymore, that’s a shame. The promise is, IF you make 9 consecutive Monday novenas to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception , she will grant your request (IF your request is good for your soul.) I did and it worked wonders for me.

and as long as it complies to God’s will for your life.

I believe along the same lines as a few other posters here. There is no such thing as coincidence or bad luck.

All things happen for a reason. To save you from something, get you closer to God’s plans for you, etc. It is better and more mentally fruitful to think that all things happen under God’s economy then under the devil’s.

God is in charge.
