Since we Catholics believe that the Millenium started during the first century and will last until Christ returns, then these verses must be something in the future:

Revelation 20:7-9 “When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison. He will go out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. They invaded the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the holy ones and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them.”

What could this refer to? If most of Revelation is symbolic of things that already happened in the first century, are these verses a prophecy about the future? Or are they symbolic too?

Could it be that Satan was released recently? Like sometime in the 1900’s?

Well, I’m a convert from protestantism, and I was taught that Revelations was prophecy,. Prophecy that hasn’t yet happened. But I also heard that the prophecy was for the first century only. 🤷 For all I know, it may be both!!

Hi ChristyBeth,
A belated welcome to the Catholic Church. I hope you don’t mind my forthcoming minor nit pick. The last book of the bible is called Revelation. Anyway.

Hello everyone. It has been a while…

Regarding Revelation, I must recommend Michael Barber’s book, “Coming Soon: Unlocking the Book of Revelation and Applying Its Lessons Today” for an in-depth, scholarly exploration of the last book in the Bible.

Michael Barber is the Theology Professor at John Paul the Great Catholic University in San Diego, CA.

Why am I so “gung-ho” about his book? I am one of his pupils, a student at JP Catholic. I know that if you check his book out, you will certainly understand Revelation better than ever before.

Yours in Christ,
Daniel

You can easily find the answer to this question by reading the Introduction and the footnotes for the Book of Revelation. 😉

Thank you. This is helpful:

“A description of the symbolic battle to take place when Satan is released at the end of time, when the thousand years are over;”

I wonder if this happened in 1967? The battle still seems to be going on!
