Satan vs the devil vs lucifer

Hello,

Whats the difference between satan, the devil, and lucifer? On priest once said that the devil is the force behind evil, and caused lucifer to turn into satan. Is this correct? If not, what is? And are we supposed to hate no one or is it okay to hate the devil/lucifer/satan?

Saint James wrote, “resist Satan, and he will flee you.” (James 4:7)

They are three names for the selfsame being. Generally, however, the name “Lucifer” is usually applied to the angel created by God, previous to his sin. When he sinned, he became “Satan,” the Adversary.

I think “devil” usually can refer to evil in general, even when it is not Satan in person acting, but some other demon(s).
